Mark 12 Imperial Railgun

This is the standard issue rifle used by the Laniakea Imperial Technocracy. It's a very useful anti-shield and can cut through light armour with no trouble. It can accelerate a small sabot round up to 0.05% the speed of light when in a vacuum. When in an atmosphere (the most common place for this weapon to be used) it only fires rounds out at terminal velocity.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

In principle, the weapon isn't too complex. It uses a series of magnets to accelerate a projectile. The electromagnets that accelerate the sabot have been designed to accelerate them very quickly with the use of large amounts of energy typically drawn from an antimatter cell.

Significance

The weapons are a staple ground conflict. They can take down a well armoured opponent very quickly, so long as they don't use a particle shield. If they do have such shields though, the railguns don't have too much trouble wearing them down; the projectiles' high velocities take a large amount of energy to completely negate. They're very deadly and moderately cheap, and so have shaped ground warfare for countless millennia.
