Guayana

Guayana, also known as Guiana in English, Cayenne in French, Goias in Portuguese and Guyana in Dutch, is an area of intense vegetation, rocky surface and abnormally high elevation located on northern America. The region falls entirely under Colombian administration, most of which is administered by the homonym federal subject.

Geography

The region features a very distinctive landscape, including extreme vegetation growth, a very diverse ecosystem, creeks, waterfalls, tepuys, caverns and many river rapids, being a mixture of both high and hilly terrain with flat Amazonian lowlands. The area's terrain is predominantly hilly and the soil is overwhelmingly muddy.   The area is one of the oldest geological formations on Earth, which has lead to millions of tons of organic matter to be deposited in the area throughout the years, eventually being crushed by tectonic pressures and becoming one of the most extensive oil deposits on Earth.   Main local waterways include the Orinoco and Caroni rivers, and main water bodies include the Guri artificial reservoir and the Atlantic Ocean. The reservoir supplies the Guri Hydroelectric Power Station, officially the largest Hydroelectric Dam in the world both by the length of the dam and of the reservoir, but not the largest in volume.

Fauna & Flora

The flora and fauna of the region have been studied in deepness not only because it is thought to be one of the most diverse ecosystems in the planet, but because of the continuous fertility of the soil in the region. It is thought that because of nitrate-rich particles flown from the Colombian plains as well as high levels of precipitation, the area has become increasingly fertile and naturally abundant of all types of tropical vegetation.

Natural Resources

Because of tectonic pressures and geological events, the area has big deposits of many resources, oil, iron and aluminium being the main ones. Other materials such as magnesium, titanium, gold, magnetite, copper, tin and quartz can sometimes also be found in economically viable quantities.

Tourism

Tourism to the area has skyrocketed during recent years, becoming a noticeable permanent secondary activity in the area. Touristic activities surrounding extreme sports, sightseeing, parachuting, or adventurous trips across the Amazonian rainforest can all be found in the region.
