"There have been few conflicts on Iacchan soil as bloody as the Delta Seizure... if the Gods are good, they will let it cease soon. Doubtful, as it's gone on for a decade yet."

The Conflict
Prelude
In 1667, the city-state of Garrond had successfully (and amiably) gained their independence from the province controlled by House Aria through a peaceful treaty between the locale's Lord Mayor Alexandre Dokado and Head of House Tortimer Aria.
However, House Palatius took note of this sudden opening. They sought to control all of the Iacchan River Delta (as it remains one of the most fertile areas in the world for "exotic" agriculture that makes a pretty penny), and immediately began to plot their invasion strategy to take hold of this land. As the city-state of Garrond is not protected under laws set by either the Noble Coaltion or the U5, they could do this without fear of repercussion.
The inciting incident of the war occurred on Blue Sea Moon 10, CY 1669 - when a Palatian assassin murdered
Alexandre Dokado in his sleep. However, most of the higher-ups in Garrond were
Wizards trained at the
Avena Monastery in various magicks and tactics. With little difficulty, they tracked the assassin back to House Palatius' manor and formally declared war upon the province.
The battle began on equal footing - two opposing cities of mostly-equal size. However, when House Palatius began hiring mercenaries from outside noble houses (mainly those of
House Gavinies and
House Heleyra), the tides quickly turned in their favor. Garrondian armies were
decimated, and as of late 1679, the city-state of Garrond is officially under the U5's definition of
siege. Most war scholars predict that the city-state will surrender sometime in the next four months, though diviners who have run predictions foretell a strange twist of fate occurring.
On Pegasus Moon 12, 1680, the city-state of Garrond would fall and become a part of House Palatius. Every member of Garrond's sole noble family - House Verdana - was executed with the exception of Niccolo Verdana, who was rescued by the visiting matriarch of
The Noble House of Malatesta, who would offer his rescue if Niccolo were to take her daughter's hand in marriage.
Many Garrondians were slaughtered in the incident, leading the
U5 to investigate House Palatius' activities.
