Chaelen Orc
"Territorial yet tightly-knit, the Chaelen Orcs are one of the two remaining whole indigenous Orcish societies remaining in Uthilith."
Naming Traditions
Unisex names
Since Chaelen Orcs don't have a binary concept of gender, all names are considered unisex.
Some of these names include:
- Urthaz - means "of the earth" in Orcish. Commonly used in the Grūtzlög family, especially towards those in line to be a part of the town's druidic circle. Adopted from the Ancient Master of Evocation Urthaz Chrestwyth who hailed from Tempora, the most famous full-blooded orc in Uthilith's storied history.
- Atesk - means "warrior" in Orcish. Most commonly used in the Řhouv family, but found throughout the culture. Occurs with the same frequency as names like "John" in Common.
- Morthal - means "stormbringer" in Orcish. A very uncommon name, and is only used once every few centuries when the Gruumshian priest presiding over a birth has received a divine message from Gruumsh himself, indicating a calamitous event upon the horizon. Those christened Morthal become powerful, planetouched protectors of Grūmstultimǎ - even Orcs can become Aasimar.
Family names
Much like their Temporan cousins, full-blooded Orcs have three family names that make up the entirety of their society. Since arriving in Chaelwyth circa CY 100, they chose to adopt new surnames to separate themselves from Mimmaz.
In tradition with Gruumsh's holy symbol (a triangular eye with bony protrusions), there are three familial names that exist in Chaelen Orc society.
Řhouv - means 'courageous' in the Chaelen dialect of Orcish. They serve as the protectors of Grūmstultimǎ, and are trained in highly advanced martial combat from childhood to become some of the finest soldiers on the continent.
Grūtzlög - means 'watcher' in the Chaelen dialect of Orcish. Since full-blooded Orcs almost always serve in the name of Gruumsh, these 'watchers' are his clerics and healers. This family trains in medicinal, spiritual, and natural practices to bolster their society.
Nogvarāt - means 'wealth' in the Chaelen dialect of Orcish. Comprises the merchant class of Chaelen Orcs, who range in profession from shopkeepers to nobility.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Orcish is their primary language, an entirely verbal form of speech that contains a lot of drawn-out vowels and guttural consonants. They've since adopted the Halfling alphabet for their script, which is still seldom used in the society (with the exception of the clergy). The specific Chaelen dialect contains a lot of loanwords from both Elvish and Halfling, which has caused their accent to gradually add a bit more lilt than their Temporan counterparts.
Shared customary codes and values
"Every individual has their place in our society, and failure to accept that as their identity is a failure in the eye of Gruumsh."
Common Dress code
In their proximity to the ley line that provides energy from Pandemonium, the climate in Grūmstultimǎ is rather warm. Thus, their wardrobes tend to be comprised of linen garments with quite a bit of skin showing.
For formal settings, Chaelen Orcs have adopted a tradition of elaborate corsetry for events. They constantly try to outdo one another with over-the-top garments made from the finest leathers available, with their hair and beards immaculately kept in gorgeous braids.
Art & Architecture
Orcs have a rich history of song, having originated the technique of 'throat singing' - engaging one's false vocal cords without the usage of magic to create multiple pitches at the same time. Since Chaelen Orcs have little to no written history, their tradition is orally communicated within their community and has been passed down for dozens of generations.
Coming of Age Rites
Once a Chaelen Orc hits fifteen years of age, they are brought to the Temple in the center of Grūmstultimǎ. The High Priest challenges the Orc to hand-to-hand combat - the vast majority of these Orcs lose and are quickly nursed back to health by the Priest, but being on death's door like that is the rite of passage to adulthood. Those that win, however, are quickly inducted into their force of paladins - the Order of the One-Eye.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
Chaelen Orcs prioritize resourcefulness in a way that Temporan Orcs do not - thus, the concept of beauty is attached deeply to cultural service rather than physical appearance. In deep contrast to most other Uthilithian societies, Chaelen Orcs consider older individuals within their settlement to be far more attractive than the youth. It means that they've survived long enough to perform acts in the name of Gruumsh, and that they've accrued the respect of the culture in a far more significant way than any of the youth can.
Gender Ideals
Orcish only has two singular third person pronouns, the casual lüd or the formal třa, and both could generally be translated to the Common they (singular). All names in Orcish are considered unisex, even if their reproductive biology remains relatively similar to that of Humans. No matter what 'gender' they would be assigned by a typical Human at birth, a Chaelen Orc will utterly ignore those facets and go about their business.
