Knight, Dunsland

As is common in many countries with titled nobility, the crown of Dunsland may elect to bestow upon certain valourous individuals a chivalric title. The main such title is that of knighthood. The authority to bestow a knighthood onto an individual lies with the current monarch, but it is considered proper for a different noble, usually a duke, to be the person petitioning for the title.

Requirements

Individuals recommended for knighthood must have displayed two things: an example of great valour and that they have "good character". Both of these traits are described during the initial part of the accolade by the petitioner.

It is also expected that a knight have some degree of martial skill due to the potential military duties they may gain, especially during times of war. This is rarely tested, however, as the required example of valour is usually enough proof.

There are no racial or societal requirements to becoming a knight, but it is exceedingly rare that someone not yet viewed as an adult would be considered.

Appointment

The knighting ceremony, or accolade, is a relatively public affair almost always held within the great hall of Dun Castle. It is presided over by the monarch and is usually observed by the Archbishop of the Church of Thirasmus and a suitably high-ranking member of the military.

First, the monarch formally calls out a challenge to those congregated, inviting the petitioner to describe the merits of the candidate. With this completed, the candidate is called forth and has the symbol of the lion pinned to their chest. King Justinian, the current ruler of Dunsland, also taps his sword upon the candidate's left shoulder as additional symbology.

Benefits

Upon knighthood, the candidate is presented with a badge of office (in the form of a brass and gold rampant lion) and a commemorative case containing the following:

  • A finely crafted cavalry sabre with scabbard.
  • An official, written and sealed declaration of the title.
  • 100 gold pieces, minted in the days before with the name of the candidate upon them.
  • A promissory banknote for an additional 1900 gold pieces.

  • Outside of exceptional circumstances, knights have free access to both noble courts and military command thoughout Dunsland. In addition, as knighthood is a title of minor nobility, it represents one of the only routes towards becoming landed nobility.

    Accoutrements & Equipment

The only item expected to be on a knight's person at all times is their badge of office. They are, however, expected to comport themselves with dignity and should be well dressed for ceremonial occasions.
