Character Creation & Progression
Character Creation
Characters created within Urvén follow the basic instructions laid out within the Player's Handbook with the following minor differences.
- Ability scores follow the alternative rules for customizing ability scores within the same book: a 27 point buy system.
- Players may elect to exchange two ability points from their racial bonuses for a feat in a similar fashion to the variant rules for ability score increases.
- Players may start with experience points equal to half those of the current highest-level character, rounded down.
Currently, players may not use the variant character creation rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Progression
Experience points are drastically simplified and are no longer a function of how much a character kills. Instead, a character gains an experience point for the following actions:
- Complete a quest. Examples include exploring and looting a dungeon or completing a contract to slay large beast.
- Achieve a major personal milestone. Examples include reaching a certain rank within an organisation or crafting an object worked on for a long period of time.
- Finish a story arc. Completing a story arc gives a bonus experience point on top of the one rewarded for quest completion.
- Adventure with higher level players. Completing a session that would not normally reward an experience point gives a bonus experience point to anyone who is not currently the most experienced player.
Please see the table below for a reference of how a character's level is calculated from their experience points.
Player Progression
Player progression is defined by tier of play - defined within the Dungeon Master's Guide. As a character reaches a higher level, the further levels take an increased quantity of experience. One experience point is gained upon completion of an appropriate-difficulty challenge such as a dungeon. If a character of a higher level exists within the party, lower level characters gain an experience point per session until they have caught up.

Epic Progression
Urvén does not use the Epic Boon progression laid out in the Player's Handbook. Instead, progression will follow a new pattern from levels 21 to 50 in a way that is designed to increase the power of a character without drastically increasing the breadth of their choices of action. At level 50, a character would be considered a demigod.
