It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try to keep up with Chicago. She outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them.
— Mark Twain, 1883
Known variously as "the Windy City," "the City of Big Shoulders," or "Chi-Raq," Chicago is one of the most widely celebrated, routinely demonized, and thoroughly contested cities in the world.   Chicago is the city of Gwendolyn Brooks and Chief Keef, Al Capone and Richard Wright, Lucy Parsons and Nelson Algren, Harold Washington and Studs Terkel. It is the city of Fred Hampton, House Music, and the Haymarket Martyrs. It remains the headquarters of the IWW, and its radical history, like radical blood, flows through its streets.
The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.
— Antonio Gramsci, 1930
Monsters, magic, and mortals; fill this world, and they compete in the city. In the world of Urbs in Horto, 4 'Circles;' 'Mortalis,' 'Night,' 'Power,' and 'Wild,' represent various kinds of supernatural beings, or at least those aware of their existence. They all exist and coexist, vying for power, territory, and control; but also identity, community, and self-sufficiency in the legendary city of Chicago.   Your characters are members of these Circles, they seek to carve out their own part of the city, assert their identity, create community, or even seek to build greater change. You will have to cooperate across communities to advance, so it may be wise to build characters in different factions from your fellow players. But, no one should monopolize a faction, and everyone should feel free to play whatever archetype intrigues them, as characters can easily be retired as threats through the brilliant Corruption system in Urban Shadows.
