In the criminal underworld, many dream of becoming a boss as a ticket to glamour and excess.
Some, for the attention and power, others still to finally live a life utterly free from the spectre of need. Still more like the romance and excitement of heists and chases, fights and conspiracies.
Ashen Boutique has never dreamed of any of these, and has very little time for those who do.
Known as “Dull Grey” to some, Boutique’s long tenure as a mid-level gangster in the Black Needle Syndicate was remarkable for two reasons: having very few dramatic victories, and having no substantial defeats, whether by rival gangs or any other factions within Ur.
Claiming control of the Needle, Boutique quickly and impassively dealt with any dissent, and turned his attention to the state of the Syndicate, finding himself irritated by how many gang members were trying to imitate the swashbuckling derring-do of Merry Shiv and, for that matter, Skitters Prefect.
He immediately put a stop to this nonsense, and organised the gang into territories generating revenue through reliable, low-profile criminal activity. “We are businessmen, not gamblers” is a phrase of which he will often remind his lieutenants.
