City of Vredenport

Vredenport is a moderately sized port city built into the cliff sides of the Schilden coast. A longstanding mercantile center of the Thaylen empire, Vredenport houses some of the headquarters of various guilds and trade associations, and is home to branches of others, notably the Thaylen Merchant’s Association. However, due to the large amount of wealth flowing through the city there is a large criminal presence and black market, that is often at odds with the city guard. The the city itself is multi-layered, with a ward of docks and warehouses built at the base of the cliff, a section of living areas and government buildings built on top. The transitory point between these two is a steeply sloped section of the city built against the cliff wall, on top of large stone supports that allow the buildings to expand out from the sheer rock face of the rest of the shorelines. Under the buildings, streets and stairs supported by these stone pillars lies the Undertavern a darker side of the city that houses most of its criminal element, and many of its taverns, brothels and other shadier businesses, giving it its name.

Demographics

Mostly populated by Humans and Halflings, though Half-Elves and Half-Orcs are not uncommon. Tieflings, Genasi and Elves are a rarer sight. Dragonborm, Dwarves, Kobolds and Lizardfolk are rarely seen if ever. Most of the population of the city is either manual laborers or merchants.

Government

Vredenport is ruled by the Baron Sedrick of Vredenport, who does not live within the bounds of the city, preferring a mansion to the west of the city itself. The Baron is aided by a council of merchants who see to most of the day-to-day regulation of the city. As such there is a minor issue of corruption as the Baron tends to keep out of the city's affairs.

Defences

Large well-built walls surround the Traveller's ward, and reach down the cliff faces and into the ocean. These walls are defended by a moderately sized contingent of city guards. A military fortification and training area to the north of Vredenport is available to provide reinforcements at quick notice should the need arise.

Industry & Trade

Vredenport is a port city. It almost entirely thrives off of trade, and levies on imported and exported goods, however, local farming and fishing also provide some business for the city.

Infrastructure

Vredenport is split into three (four) wards, each comprising a different portion of the city's structure. The Dockside ward is at the base of the cliff and only a few feet above sea level. It sports a maze of docks allowing hordes of seafaring and coastal merchant vessels access to the city. This ward also provides numerous warehouses, guild halls and resting places for dockworkers, sailors and travellers. The Traveller's ward is the portion of the city at the top of the cliff, it consists mostly of housing, a few administrative buildings, a few inns, and a few stores that cater to travellers passing through the upper portion of the city. The Merchant's ward connects the Traveller's ward to the Dockside ward, and is a set of layered, hollow walls and platforms that provide solid ground for numerous structures to be built upon. This ward mostly consists of various shops and guild halls, as well as a few inns and taverns. Finally, the Undertavern is an unofficial ward built underneath the Merchant's ward, it contains a sprawling black market and red light district, and houses various gangs and other criminal organizations.
