Kuiper Hospital (k-eye-per hos-pi-tal)

People said we were insane, when we decided to build a hospital on an asteroid in the Kuiper belt. But [the asteroid] wasn't really doing anything, and it was easier at the time than building one on Pluto or any other body in the Kuiper belt. And people need a hospital.

The Kuiper Hospital is one of the oldest outer system medical facilities, built in 2100 to be used by all colonisers sent to bodies in the Kuiper belt. Built within and around an asteroid, it retains its status as one of the few buildings situated on a non gravitationally rounded terrestrial body. 
The hospital is located approximately 35 AU from the sun.

Purpose / Function

The Kuiper hospital mainly treats patients living on Pluto, Charon, Eris, Haumae and Makemake. It also treats people visiting those locations and those injured whilst in flight near the Kuiper belt. 
Even more rarely, patients are transported there from other hospitals located on planets and moons, normally to receive treatment better administered in zero gravity.

Alterations

The building is constantly being maintained and altered, with expansions happening roughly every five years. This is due to the increase in demand for the hospital.
In June 2195 plans were made to create a second hospital building on another nearby asteroid. These plans are not likely to come into fruition, as the two buildings of the hospital would be ordbiting at different speeds, growing increasingly further apart with time.

History

In 2100, the hospital was opened, originally containing just rooms within the body of the hollowed-out asteroid (87555) 2000 QB243, though the hospital didn't receive its first patients until ????.

Tourism

Cruises of the solar system will often enter orbit around the hospital for a while to show passengers the first and only asteroid hospital.. Due to the hospitals nature, that of it being a hospital treating patients, cruises will often be told to leave orbit if and when it is noticed that they are not actually patients.
