Storm Giants
Basic Information
Anatomy
The more carnivorous and predatory Giantkind. Like all giants, the Storm Giants walk on their knuckles to protect their claws and are around 3 meters in length. They have front facing eyes and are covered in thick white or desaturated brown fur suitable for hunting in the arctic.
Ecology and Habitats
They are nomadic hominids residing in caves or snow burrows. They are fiercely territorial over their habitats and hunting grounds, so much so that they often wrestle with other giants over territory.
Dietary Needs and Habits
These giants are carnivores, they hunt nearly any living being they can find, including hominids like Yaludar, Ashirad and Shaban. Their sharp claws are not for grabbing treebranches, but for hunting and grappling. These giants are ambush predators, burrowing themselves in the snow a little bit before rushing towards their prey. They tend to have especially successful hunts in snowstorms and fogs.
Biological Cycle
When the Polar Vortex forms and Spiritual forces begin to shapeshift the arctic, food becomes especially scarce. Thus the Storm Giants hibernate in the winter, having low metabolism throughout the entire season. When the storm calms again they spend the entire spring and summer eating as much food as they can fit, hunting as much as they can in order to survive the next storm.
When a giant dies, the community cannibalize the body and the bones are worn/carried by the community as an honorary trinket. A giant's death signifies to them that they're no longer in their bodies. Just like using every part of a hunted animal in order to waste as little as they can, giants pragmatically have the same practice with deceased family. Next to their meat being consumed and their bones used as tools and trinkets, their fur is used as clothing to provide extra protection for the weaker giants. When the dominant elder in their community dies, nearly all of their bones will be worn by the next elder, fashioning it into decorative necklaces and braces and the skull will be worn as a mask.
In late summer, giant communities tend to gather closer to the eye of the Polar Vortex in order to bury the oldest and heaviest bones, this place has been appropriately named: Giant Graveyard.
