Portal
Portals are utilized by witches to travel from one spot to another. In Ilyrium, there are many Portals placed strategically to aid witches to travel across the large city. Portals within the city are free to use; however, Portals that travel to other countries usually cost a fee to utilize. Portals meant that witches were no longer confined to a small area; they could travel the world.
Transportation Magic
Those born with Transportation Magic are the creators and maintainers of the Portals; they are called Transporters. Transportation Magic only evolved in witches around 1650; prior to that, only those with a Level One or Two had the ability to create Portals (the rule still exists to this day).
Maintenance
Portals must be maintained (i.e., strengthened with magic) by Transporters; if not, the Portals can decay or "die." If this occurs, the Portal can send a user to an undesired location. Weekly maintenance of Portals is common for those that travel within a city, but Portals that cross long distances must be maintained daily.
Availability
Portals are available all throughout United Britannia and Hibernia to the public. However, because of the chance that Portals may malfunction, only witches 16 and older may use the Portal without being accompanied by an adult.
Discovery
Aurelius Hart developed the Portal in 1556. As a Level Two witch, Hart developed many spells, especially those aiding in transportation. However, he felt there was a need for long-distance transportation in order to more globalize the witch population.
Utility
Portals are used by witches to travel throughout the world. Portals can be used to travel within a town, to another city, and in some cases, to other countries. Portals, however, can malfunction; if it is not properly maintained/created or, in some cases, just a random mishap, can send the user(s) to somewhere they do not desire. Because of this, the rule was instated that only those 16 and older may use it without an adult, so as to ensure that if a user is sent to an undesired location, they have the proper training to find a way back to their previous location.
Manufacturing
Portals can, essentially, be made from any material; however, stone is most common. Portals are almost always arches, although some are more tunnel-like or simply made from natural formations. Portals are sometimes richly decorated with flowers and ribbons, although ones in Ilyrium are usually simply stone.
