    Personal History

The fourteenth of fifteen siblings, he never got much attention from his family, not even when he was a newborn. It was okay, he had his friends. They were a bit of a bad influence, but they taught him about the things they studied at school, and would come all the way to the border of the city to play cards with him.   It turned out they came to his family’s farm to steal apples for a class assignment, but they also enjoyed playing cards, and his company. One of those friends wanted him to be his minion or something. It seemed like an honor at the time, so he joined the school so he could really be part of the group.   It wasn’t an honor. And he wasn’t a good minion, nor a good bad guy. He was expelled in a couple of years, and he wasn’t exactly unhappy about it.   It was hard to learn other skills, but getting rid of the bad memories and the secret judgment of the rest of the city was plainly impossible.   Somehow he continued to be friends with some of those who had been his classmates, and they would scare people into giving him a job. It was uncomfortable but it allowed him to earn a living.   At some point he found love, and made a family. He didn’t want his children to grow up and find out how she had gotten his job, so he kept looking for something else. Doors remained closed with ridiculous excuses meant to hide that they were discriminating against him for being associated with the academy.   Out of nowhere, the school’s janitor called him to offer him a job. A not necessarily evil job, at an evil institution. It didn’t feel unethical and, while many people would consider it scary to work in that building, he knew that the position offered was probably safe. As long as she learnt well from the woman that was planning to retire and give him her job.
