Night of the Burning sea

A remembrance night of the sacrifice of every ship docked to stop the Empire of Akoom. A mix of a somber event and a celebration.

Origin

Started in 130 Devine after the battle of Lacertillia, In honor of the sailors who gave their lives to burn the imperial fleet. This was done by candles being sent out into the sea, one candle for each sailor. This became an annual tradition after a unanimous vote to do so, much to the chagrin of the empire.

tradition

On the 40th Rapha, most shops close in the early afternoon and don't reopen till the afternoon of the following day, shipping lanes are also closed an hour before dusk and reopen the next day. Early evening at dusk families of the lost sailors, or representatives lower a little wooden ship with a candle on top out of the port. After this a celebration of freedom where citizens would have street parties, bringing out food and drink for the rest of the street. A bonfire is lit on a boat in the harbor. This goes on till the early hours.

legarcy

As the families of the sailors died out, the state took more responsibility for the boats, it became common for families of current sailors to participate in the ships to show their willingness to do the same. This led to many more boats than the original fleet being sent out, showing loyalty to Lacertillia.
