Eastern Mangroves

A vast mangrove swamp east and south east of Basq that links theseveral oceans with the Rivellian Sea. The area used to be the heart of the Vedalken empire and a major trade way, though this would change throughout history. The area is currently isolating itself from Undinia due to a short conflict with Basq.

Geography and climate

The entire area covers around a million miles of waterways, islands, and groves, though these are ever shifting. Most of the waterways are wide enough for several small boats to travel side by side, with some wider ones even being able to allow Serpent Class ships to travel down, however the weak winds of the area make sailing near impossible. Some of the smaller channels are shallow enough to wade through, but few creatures do. The islands are made of mangrove trees and small sediment trapped among it's roots. The tides and water level changes throughout the day with high tide being at midday, often leaving a completely dry area submerged hours later.   The climate of the whole area is tropical and wet, frequent thunder storms pass the area, though colder in the northern parts of the swamp, it is still warmer then Undinia.

Creatures

The damp environment has given rise to not only a massive population of fish, crocodiles, and amphibians in the water. The tree tops are full of birds or paradise and smaller birds of prey, as well as primates, snakes, insects, climbing felines, and otters in both the tops of trees or amongst the roots.   Several groups of beastmen also call the area home. Catmen travel in clans around the swamp, following prey and cycling several duties between the tribes, they are the most populace group. Monkeymen live in small tree top settlements, probably the most secretive group. Lizardmen tribes mostly stick to their tribes in the shallow sea, though their boats can be seen trading throughout the area. Grung live in small communities among the mangrove roots, though they seem not to be native. While Vedalken have been seen in the area, no signs of an active civilization of theirs, with only traders seen. A Naga city has been constructed on the western coast, with fighting and trade between them on the other groups.

Special areas

Dotted around are swamp are several larger permanent islands, as well as a few other distinct areas.

Flesh isle

The most northern of the large isles, it is around a mile in size and considered cursed by the local tribes. The island is covered in sandalwood trees, vines and fern plants. This hides a ruined temple in the middle of the island used in the Forgotten past to cause the fracturing of the area. Seemingly lifeless, with the exception of the forest, at first trespassers soon find the plants themselves are not only predatory, but vengeful of life.

Temple Isle

A island sacred to the Catmen, it is a open island of grass and beaches with only a trees around the edge, the shallow water around it allow people to move from the swamp to the island without needing a boat. In the centre of the island is a stepped pyramid with a pyre on top. A tribe of black furred catmen permanently lives in the shadow of this temple.

shallow sea

An area of around five thousand miles squared on the south western part of the mangroves where the islands seem to fall away to pure swampland. Dark gnarled trees dot the area with the water never being above three foot deep. Home to the Lizardmen tribes that dot the entire area, many argue whether this is part of the mangroves or the start of the Draconic Archipelago. Rumours from the area talk of a ruined city in the centre.

The Royal Canal

A massive waterway that winds east to west wide and deep enough for a pair of large vassals to pass, splitting the whole mangrove in half. Several rope bridges crisscross the waterway allowing travel by foot between the sides. Maps show a massive lake in the centre of the area, though it is unclear what's there. While it is called a canal, it seems to be naturally occurring and meanders more like a river.
