Monseocnes Condition in Underdeep | World Anvil

Monseocnes

Monseocnes, or Moon-sickness is a type of mental illness commonly found throughout the known world. It is a catch-all term for any mental disorder which does not have a spiritual, magickal, or physical cause.

Causes

The cause of Monseocnes is unknown, but the common folk believe it can be affected by the phases of the moons and planets. For some it is present at birth, while others develop it later in life.

Symptoms

Monseocnes manifests itself in many different, often contradictory, ways depending upon the victim. Emotions states range between mania, depression, or inability to feel any emotion at all. Some become hysterical and violent, while others are withdrawn and sullen.

Treatment

There is no known treatment, though the intensity of their symptoms may vary over time, the only known cure is a permanent one - the grave.   Wealthier victims will sometime be treated with the tears of the poppy, which while keeping the victim calm and reducing their risk of harm to others, ultimately only encourages quicker onset of death.

Prognosis

Though there are many charlatans who claim to be able to claim to be able to cure Monseocnes, most consider it to be incurable outside of a miraculous intervention from the gods.

Cultural Reception

Victims of Monseocnes are rarely accepted by society at large, and are often persecuted by the common folk who fear them. This fear is often misplaced, arising from the erroneous belief that the victim's condition may spread, or that a more malignant supernatural force is responsible. It will often take a trained medicus, a priest, and a practitioner of magick to agree on the diagnosis of Monseocnes, but by that point it is often too late, with the victim driven out of their community, or stoned to death by an angry mob.
