Chameleos Conundrum
In Wyveria a new group of monster hunters gathered to recieve their certification to hunt dragons. They consisted of Brink, Mac the Mane, Pumpkin, Sadie, and Rider. After a somewhat rocky start, where Pumpkin and Brink almost came to blows, the group was asked to meet with His Immenseness, the unofficial leader of the Monster Hunter Guild.
As the group was waiting for him to finish up his previous meeting, they heard him say "make sure she doesn't hurt anyone else" to any attendant who immediately took off. He then explained to the group that an old friend of his was having an issue with a Chameleos. He asked the group to go investigate and take care of the problem, and provided an airship for the party to ride to get there. While on the ship Rider, who could only speak to the two monks of the party due to a language barrier, investigated the whole vessel, taking copious notes on how it was constructed.
When the party was dropped off in the village they spoke to the elder there who explained that a caravan bringing supplies was attacked with only a single survivor making it to the village to tell the tale. The survivor explained that they where making a normal run when their cart broke and the caravan wound up making camp for the night to repair it in the Shade Marshlands. The next day dawned foggy and through the murk the Chameleos attacked, decimating the caravan. The only unusual items in the wagons were some fossils of a Teostra ancestor found in the arctic mountains that the caravan was planning to sell to some Scriviners.
The party also talked to some other monster hunters that had been sent to deal with the problem- the Hell Hunters, who seemed content to eat and drink rather than deal with the problem. Though they did semi-jokingly challenge the party to retrieve a specific egg for them from the nearby wilds. They had no useful information to provide.
Brink also got sidetracked pulling a legendary sword up out of the ground, managing it through sheer brute strength.
The party started off, tracing the steps of the caravan backwards to try and find the Chameleos. On the way they encountered a mother Nargacuga and her teenage offspring. The two fought for a bit before driving off the teenager and capturing the mother. The group continued on, mostly sneaking their way around or sidestepping the other monsters they encountered. They did run across a theivery of Melynx (?) who tried to pickpocket them. This was rapidly solved by punting the Melynx with extreme predjudice.
They also passed by a sleeping creatue with the nest of eggs that the Hell Hunters had asked them to retrieve. The creature was being carefully tended to by a group from a nearby village. Apparently the creature served as a deterrent for other monsters. The rest of the party moved on, but Rider decided to hang back and steal an egg which she did. This cause large boulders to randomly spawn in the next section, blocking travel.
Brink solved this problem by punching through it.
The group eventually found their way to the Chameleos's cave where they wove their way through a series of annoying but harmless traps. They thought they found the den of the dragon and did their best to sneak attack the beast only to discover that it was a realistic balloon. Several members got pied for their trouble with stabbing the balloon sprung a trap. Some investigating of the room revealed that the bookshelf was a puzzle that opened up a secret door that led the Chameleos's true lair where he was playing poker with some Melynx.
The dragon introduced himself as Jiix and said claimed that he hadn't killed the caravan, but he knew who did. He promised to give the party the information if they dealt with a problem of his-- a new dragon had moved into the territory and was proving to be a threat. The party believed Jiix and agreed to deal with the other dragon.
Rider also spotted a painting in Jiix layer that depicted some people from Ahm. Jiix revealed that the people from Ahm, including a warforged named 37731lbu0, had made a deal with Jiix for some old bones. Rider also invited Jiix back to the Sword Coast and Jiix agreed to go on the basis that it sounded interesting.
The party went out hunting and quickly found and dealt with the other dragon. Jiix upheld his hend of the bargain and revealed that it was a trio of leviathans that had killed the caravan. However, the party also realized that Jiix would have lured or assisted the leviathans in order to get into contact with someone who could deal with the invading dragon. To make amends, Jiix agreed to help fight the Leviathans. One shoreline battle later, the party had successfully completed their mission.
The party returned to the village where the elder thanked them, paid them, and told them story of why the birthplace of hunters no longer had any hunters to call its own.
Apparently the Elder was one of the first hunters, along with his wife. He took a step back from hunting when his wife died, but another huntress by the name of Xela quickly rose through the ranks. One day a threat was found at a nearby castle and Zeela took a group of hunters to clear it out. She was the only one to come back, but she was different, after. Lashing out where once she had been kind. Eventually she simply left.
The day she went to the castle, the children were singing a song about Fatalis.
