Woldian Magic

Woldian Magic is the blanket term for magic that follows the same general structure as the one established by Grizwold, The Master of Many during his rise to fame as one of the most powerful Archmagi that ever lived. Woldian magic generally relies on the body of the caster to channel and maintain magical energy, and so most spells that are meant to persist must be continuously channeled from raw magic into the desired effect through the caster's body. This is a conscious effort, and when a Woldian mage is physically harmed falls unconscious, the flow of magic is disrupted and ends their spell early.

Social Impact

Although Woldian magic was originally invented out of a rebellious spirit, it was quickly adopted by nearly everyone who had magical business to go about. Once it became apparent that this new form of study would neither elevate all mortal mages to the level of gods nor remove the willingness of mortal mages to deal with faster and easier sources of magical might, its opposition saw it for what it was: a conveniently codified way to teach, measure, control, and communicate about magical powers and effects. So, Woldian magic is accessible and available to nearly every caster that has been trained in the centuries since its popularization.   In fact, the ubiquity of Woldian magic has had an interesting double edged effect on mages over time. It is the case in modern times that most mages are not able to effectively describe or interpret the effects of Precursor Magic using diagnostic methods that are based in Woldian theory. Indeed, this has proven to be quite a boon for those long lived enough to still have intimate familiarities with older magic because it allows them to work on their agendas with more limited oversight by their rivals.

Discovery
Woldian Magic was popularized by and named after Grizwold, who was the most successful member of a growing movement among mages at the time to cast, study, and create magic according to established rules and empirical evidence, rather than relying so strongly on being granted magical power from an outside source, such as one's bloodline, god, or patrons with an agenda.    At the time, it was considered radical and indeed quite dangerous to be involved in this movement, as there were quite a few powerful patrons who were not fond of mortal magical power growing unchecked.
