Harmesburg

The first thing anyone notices about Harmesburg is the noise and the smell. The constant clanking, humming and clanging fills the city air, blowing through the city streets accompanied by a concoction of smells that varies by exact location from an errant acrid smell of a artifice in progress in the Acadamy streets to the delicious smells of halfling cooking pushed to the limits of its deliciousness and floating seductively through the market squares.

Government

The Head of Government is shared between a council of the most influential people in Harmesburg, who sit on a Central Council and discuss the major issues. The Council currently consists of:   Sorynne Delnarch The representative for Delnarch Dynamics
Firenze Uked The representative for the Uked Society
Karthus Namermac The representative for the Namermac Artificers Coalition
Lollys Cairner The representative for the Churches of the city
Garner Miller The representative of the workers guilds in the city

Defences

The Clockwork Wall is a large stone brick wall built between the second and third layers of the city. It was built during the Wars of Sovereignty to defend the city, and its construction spurred technomagical advancement in the city. The wall has many hidden and extremely lethal compartments and abilities, but the city has expanded past in the years since the wall's use.   The Heathers are a legion of warforged guardians built to enfore law and order in the city.

Industry & Trade

Imports are largely for food from Nakami and the volcanic farms on the mountains. Also large amounts of metals from the Dwarven mining projects from the Molehill Mountains. The city exports magical products enchanted by the population of artificers. Magical artifice makes up probably 50% of the trade for the city by itself. The rest is crafts.
There is a floundering business in ship construction. Dwarves prefer to be on solid ground, halflings don't like to move, and the gnomes simply take no interest in the craft, viewing at as "too simple". Much of the wealth of Metia and Ovesla is derived from building and ships and transporting goods from Harmesburg.

Infrastructure

The city is built in 4 Tiers. The second tier is the Grand Acadamy of Harmesburg, and the first is the Archive of Runior. The academy tier is full of smaller schools and research laboratories. There are also a few private residences of wizards and artificers who had established themselves long ago, or who's children have inherited their now precious living space.

Assets

The city itself has a a thriving crafts market and many impressive magical advancements can be found. Items up to Rare quality can be purchased, although the prices can be difficult to pay. Artisans and artificers are very proud of their work. Someone advertising cheap magical items could be found somewhere, with a shrewd eye, but such things can often be unreliable.   Although they are not currently at war, military advancement is alive and well in the city, and it is very possible to meet individuals who may have dangerous magical weapons stashed away in their homes or coats, especially if an individual is wealthy.   The Acadamy and The Runior Archive are well guarded but invaluable sources of knowledge, and many incredible wonders are maintained within.

Guilds and Factions

Delnarch Dynamics (Military research) Uked Society (Wizards and a few druids, medicine and magical enhancement) Namermac Artificers Coalition (Common and Uncommon magic items, quantity over quality)

History

The city of Harmesburg is named for its historical relevance, long ago, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, AND goliaths were settling on Allosia. Harmesburg was the first city where they all came together and formed their unlikely alliance. The charming nature of the gnomes and the halflings slowly coaxed the isolationist dwarves and goliaths out of the mountains. Harmes is a word derived from ancient Gnomish that means "friend." Literally, the city is named City of Friends.

Architecture

The city aesthetic is largely brick, with some marvelous works of stone as well (the influence of the dwarves). Decorations of sculpted metal are common in the city, and a general industrial aesthetic has caught the imaginations of the people, who adorn their homes often with small ornamental gears. Chimneys for more affluent citizens are often brass tubes with many openings, enchanted to transmute the black smoke and soot of a fireplace into a white puffy cloud, or steam which sprays out with an occasional whistle.
The city streets run in neat grids in the farther out, newer sections. The older sections near the Acadamy district get more and more chaotic, as they were decided on the arbitrary claims of the most influential early spellcasters. Navigating the Acadamy district without directions is a surefire way to get lost.
