Dragonshards

Dragonshards are fragments of the scales of great dragons. The scales of a vanquished dragon are sometimes still suffused with the elemental power that flowed through them in life. This spark of energy can be consumed by a skilled practitioner to add a smidge of draconic fury to boost a spell with sympathetic qualities. Most frequently, the spells that make use of this effect are spells of elemental evocation, though dragon shards of dragons who channel different kinds of magic, such as the slowing breath of a copper dragon, may be used for more subtle spell-work.
Dragonshards are exceedingly, absurdly rare. Scaled shed naturally by a dragon have their elemental energy exhausted already, so there is no way to harvest these artifacts without facing down a dragon oneself (or whatever slew one, which is probably worse). Once a shard has been used, it is exhausted and usually destroyed, so even those shards that do exist are jealously guarded. And of course, attempting to rob a current owner may bring the draconic power down on a thief's head!
