The Old Villa Hospital

A building built not long after the founding of Ayefor, the Old Villa stands out as one of the more substantial and well built buildings in the lower city, though not among the tallest. The current owner is a Kalati physician, Shanar of Yadai. She and her assistants and boarders live in the rooms around the inner courtyard, while the rooms around the outer courtyard serve as clinics and convalescent beds for patients.

Purpose / Function

Currently, the Old Villa in the lower city is being used as a makeshift hospital for the residents of Ayefor's Lower City.

Alterations

Some modifications have been made to the villa to suit it's current purpose and station. The fountains and ornamental gardens in both courtyards have been converted into herb and vegetable gardens. What had been intended to be stables in the outer courtyard were divided into apartments while the villa was being rented out, but since then the internal walls have been removed and the room has been made into a large hospital ward with 12 cots. The original outer courtyard kitchen was converted into a workshop for creating medicines and cleaning medical instruments, and a dining room on the lower floor of the inner courtyard had its large hearth converted into a stove for cooking instead.

Architecture

The building was originally built in the style of a large Achean farming villa, with two inner courtyards surrounded by a covered walkway leading to various rooms around the sides. The inner courtyard is surrounded by a two story balcony/walkway with more rooms on the upper floor. It is one of the few buildings in the lower city made from cut limestone blocks rather than mud brick.

History

The villa was initially built by one of the original settlers to Ayefor who had been hoping to sufficiently irrigate the land around it for farming using magic. The attempt failed, and the lower city grew up around the villa after the original owners moved up into the terraces. For some time, the original owners rented out individual rooms in the villa for workers in the lower city. Eventually, it was gifted to the physician Shanar of Yadai (Mother Shanar an act of charity or romantic love, depending on who you ask.
