A world where empires built on magic has risen and fallen at least twice, one of which is history (or story) and one of which has faded into myth and legend (the other will, as well, for later stories). A sort of study in how the past gets distorted by history and religion.   Magic is a resource, a part of the "physics" of the world. It is a reality that this world exists in tandem with alternate worlds that are close to "touching" the physical world from some other dimension. The use of magic is energy drawn from other dimensions, and can have consequences in weakening the barrier between them, with sometimes slowly spreading and sometimes catastrophic results.   Magic is code, magic is oil, magic is power and knowledge and wealth, and the way it is used is the way those things are used. Who controls it controls the world, and who uses too much of it does so at their peril, and that of everyone else as well.
