Barony of Ranalin

The Barony of Ranalin spreads away from the capital of Fulton to the north, east and west. Ranalin includes a small area of the Sua Hills, but this area is actually controlled by the Fultonian Army. The Barony consists of prime agricultural farmland and river valleys.   Ranalin is shaped by its close proximity to the capital Fulton. Much of the area close to Fulton consists of the private estates of the Fultonian elite nobility, many of whom are from different Baronies.  The small towns and country estates are opulent as the nobility and mercantile elite use the southern part of the Barony as their pleasure garden.   The nobility are generally seen by moralists as the most decadent of all the Fultonians, while many see themselves as the only Fultonians willing to experience joy, pleasure and high culture. Notably, many of the greatest poets, bards, musicians, and playwrights are from or gained their fame in estates and towns of Ranalin. There is also a resurgence of classical learning learning from the ancient Fultonian Empire before the Guar conquest, which not only is resulting a flowering of high culture and art but a rebirth and rediscovery much past knowledge in medicine, history, geometry, magic, and astrology.   The regions close proximity to the capital and its large agricultural surpluses give it much strength in influencing Imperial policies.    The northern and eastern parts of the Barony are very different than the rest.  The Ranalin nobility are concerned with Imperial politics and not the practical management of their lands.   The nobles, more so than the rest of Fultar, grant more fiefs to lesser nobles, and demand higher dues in service and rents.  Similarly, the Baron of Ranalin has contracted out the court system to local manors and free towns, which provides a more steady revenue stream but deprives the people of a uniform system of justice.  In the end, the Ranalin peasants are worse off than in many other parts of Fultar, and rebellion and revolt are often suppressed with bloody swords.
