Giant Canopycap

"O, the canopycap / its azure rains and luminous spores / a beautiful sight / in the forest and as our floors..."

The following article is an excerpt from "The Raynbowe Forest off Northarn Kelliven", by Radnom Ting

Mushroom Forests

The forests of the Jeweled Lands are comprised almost entirely of varieties of the giant canopycap (scientific name nefriiti gargantua), a massive fungus reminiscent of common species such as meadow mushroom or fly agaric. Mature specimens have a stalk between twenty to forty feet tall, with the cap another five to ten feet tall and up to twenty feet in diameter. The color of the stalk and gills vary based on soil conditions, sunlight, rain, and season, but leading mycologist studies have only recently begun to discern the meaning of the colors. Generally, the color of the stalk and cap is established early on in the canopycap's fruiting lifespan, varying between pastel blues, purples, yellows and pinks. This color can change during the first two years of growth, but afterwards remains static for the remainder of the canopycap's (apparently unlimited) lifespan. The gills, conversely, change almost every night: while yellow is the most common hue, sufficient (or insufficient) quantities of nutrients, sun exposure, and temperature can invoke brilliant greens, blues, and reds.

Cultivation and Economic Use

For a detailed explanation of the uses of harvested canopycap flesh, see Mycowood    Dedicated cultivation of giant canopycaps is functionally unnecessary. Over thirty percent of the Jeweled Lands is officially designated as "dense mushroom forest", with an additional estimated ten percent lightly forested. No, the mycowood industry is a race against an enthusiastic mother nature  herself. Canopycaps spread via a network of subterranean membranes which cannot be seen without extensive excavation, and are summarily difficult to eradicate, leaving fungijacks the unenviable job of keeping villages from being overrun by the very thing that makes up their homes. As a result, mycowood is cheap and readily available, which more than makes up for its unreliable performance as a construction material.    Some noveau riche consider mycowood to be beneath them, preferring to import "proper" hardwood from the Gray Expanse. Older, established families in Kelliven and several Junivian states prefer to build their impressive mansions from cultivated mycowood in specifically chosen hues. Artisanal huegrowers use controlled environments to grow specific shades of wood for these displays of cultural heritage and wealth.
