The Rift of Twisting Stones

Built by eight mages long ago
Six towers o'er six cities stand.
'Twas by their magics sky did glow
Across the dark of ancient land.

Surrounded now by cities six
Twinned towers keep the rift at bay.
And now our people grow and mix,
Forever bathed in light of day.
— Ancient Dhelboric poem
Far to the west on Sundercrag, one of the scars of the Second Age descends far below the world. Surrounded by the Six Cities of Dhelboran, it descends well into The Underdark. It was formed in the Second Age of Destruction by Odos, though the exact nature of its creation is unclear. Some believe the crater to have been formed when he first descended to begin his rampage, while others contend that it was formed when Maranam struck Odos down.   The Rift would have remained nothing more than an interesting geographic feature were it not for the actions of Anduru during the Fall of the Underneath. Anduru's curse shook the crater, causing the floor of it to cave inward. The many tunnels that crisscrossed beneath it gave way, one after another, until the crater had become a titanic sinkhole that reached to the very depths of the Underdark.   In the centuries that followed, the Mountain Dwarf clans that heeded Saema's plea began to settle around the Rift, seeking to prevent the cursed beings below from using it as a point of egress. Attempts to encircle it proved nigh impossible, so the dwarven mages instead constructed a network of six towers around the edge of the Rift. From these towers, they weaved great magics that cast three beams of sunlight across the crater, lighting up the entirety of the Rift. Though it has been many millennia since then, the magic remains, forever using the light to push back the darkness.   Around these towers, six dwarven cities eventually formed. United in the common defense of the surface world they took the name Dhelboran, after one of the mages that created the beams of sunlight. They stand united to this day, ever vigilant against the twisted dangers from below.
