Slime Ray Species in Turien | World Anvil

Slime Ray

Slime ray inhabit the ocean floor. The further away from Turien's landmass, the larger they grow to, perhaps because there are less creatures utilising coral.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Slime ray found near Turien's landmass typically grow to approxiamately 75 cm in length. A few kilometres away from the landmass, the slime ray are known to grow to about 2 metres in length. The largest sighting of a slime ray is reported to be 6.75 metres long.

They have an almost circular body, of 2-6 cm depth, with a short tail at the back. They have two bulging eyes on top of their circular body, near the front. Their mouths are below their body, just behind where their eyes ar situated on top.
Their bodies have no bones, instead they are made up of a slime-covered cartilegde casing. The slime on their bodies allows the colour adaptation of the stripes on their back. Instead of teeth, they have tiny acid drops.
There are two main types of slime ray. One type has three fat stripes behind a ray's eyes (going from side to side). The second type have six stripes, with three stripes on each side, giving an arrow look to the ray).

Dietary Needs and Habits

Slime ray eat coral. They each favour a particular type of coral, shown in the colouring of their stripes. To eat a coral, they swim above the coral and chomp down, with many tiny bites. They will stay on the coral until they have either had their fill, or eaten the coral down to its base. Sometimes, they will sleep on the coral, waiting to digest before continuing to consume more.
Slime ray will always leave the base of the coral intact, in order for the coral to continue to grow. This is particularly true for their favoured type/s and they will often stay within a certain radius of their favoured types in order to not other creatures eat or use the coral.
