Corruption

Corruption is an unintended side-effect from prolonged exposure to Demon Energy. Effects manifest mainly in organic creatures such as Humans. Once afflicted, the effects are irreversible and eventually result in death if they do not seek space away from that which is afflicting them, only accelerated by not doing so.

Corruption is the poisoning of our souls, the quickened death of everything that makes us Human.

Treatment

There is no known cure or treatment for this. Once one is Corrupted, the effects stay for the rest of the individual's life.
Few who are lucky enough to be the hosts of compatible Demons may be assisted in either lessening or hiding the effects altogether. Unfortunately, this is not a foolproof alternative as the effects may return with continued use of one's abilities. On top of that, the host's survival is now completely reliant on the Demon. Depending on the rate of deterioration from this condition, a single Demon may not be enough to completely hide the effects.
If one becomes afflicted and is not a host, they are unfortunately doomed to a slow death after first signs show. If they have abilities and continue using them, the condition worsens exponentially.

Prognosis

Corruption has three stages as studied by various organizations. Most, if not all symptoms fit under one of the three stages.

Stage 1: Emergency

Physical signs manifest. Sometimes followed with pain.

Stage 2: Debilitation

Effects make power usage or daily life difficult.

Stage 3: Wasting

Death is approaching. Not much longer now.

Subject GH-38
Called in by an off-study group. Subject complains of extreme pain from using abilities. Monitoring squad complains about the subject being too loud. All complaints ignored.

The subject was incapable of lasting through the simplest tortures. Right arm shakes uncontrollably and lacks fine motor skills. Condition worse than one week ago. Probably doesn't have long. A shame.

Subject IH-417
I was called in to monitor an off-study subject. Markings appear to be peeling off the subject's body, with their skin attached. The doctor overseeing the experiments failed to calm the subject. The monitoring squad failed to follow protocol- the incident began roughly three hours ago, but for some reason they failed to alert any study squads. They will be dealt with, along with the subject.

Subjects PD-4 and PD-19
Subjects fail to show any signs of the condition. Day 674 of tests yields no results, just like the other 673. Higher-ups decided to close down this study, along with those of PD-3, PD-18, PD-19, PD-21, and PD-47. The conclusion seems to be that Pure Demons are either unaffected by the condition, or hide their symptoms perfectly.

Corruption manifests as harmless or only slightly painful physical markings on the individual's body. A majority of cases are diagnosed through the appearance of burned or blackened veins. In most individuals, these signs appear in areas where the most Energy passes through the body, and generally in one small area. Early burned veins appear as moles and slowly extend over time. Using abilities accelerates the rate of spread. Most report tingling, loss of sensation, spasms (rarely), itching, and intense burning in the afflicted areas. Effects are mild unless abilities are used. Those with Abstract Powers of any kind report intense pain for extended periods of time. It is recommended that even the suspicion of Corruption should be dealt with immediately, in an effort to at least slow its progress.
