General Development Company

The General Development Company (GeDeCo as it is more commonly known) is an Imperial megacorporation founded in 700 after the Civil War to sponsor the development of the Trojan Reach and nearby sectors. It's aim was to re-contact colonies lost since the Long Night, raise them back to interstellar Tech Levels and build cooperation between systems on the Imperial borders, ultimately with the aim of making such systems productive Imperial Client States or incorporating them into the Imperium. The primary motivation behind this was concern over continued Aslan expansion into the Trojan Reach and beyond - making sure that any future war with the Aslan in this region was fought as far forward as possible.   GeDeCo pursues these aims by sponsoring and protecting interstellar trade in the region, funding starport construction and encouraging intersystem diplomacy and contact.   Questions and concerns have been raised over the methods that GeDeCo uses, especially when it comes to funding starport construction. Low tech worlds are normally only too eager for the benefits of trade that a starport brings, and sign up to a contract where they lease land to GeDeCo, who build and operate the starport. The world then gets a cut of the profits after GeDeCo has met its operating expenses. However, worlds often find that these operating expenses and cargo handling fees are much higher than expected, and so almost all of the benefit of the starport flows into the coffers of GeDeCo, leaving the owning world with no return, or getting deeper into debt over other loans that it has taken out from GeDeCo and that were supposed to be paid back with the revenue from the starport.
