Electrian

The Electrians are the sea people found living along the banks of the Sea of Electros. They are the inhabitants of Ferros, Castia, and Mechos, as well as being a common sight in many of the other nations that border the sea.   They are a race of traders, sophist, natural philosophers, and diplomats. They have few warriors, but an abundance of professional soldiers.   Electrians are a medium to small statured people with an olive complexion. Their hair can be of any color but is most often dark and curly. Their eyes range from hazel green, through brown, and even near black.

Electrians speak the Electrian language but might also or alternatively speak Zhillian, Leonian, or a dialect of Tryperian.

Electrians are farmers, dealers, and diplomats. Their skills in trading have allowed them to grow suffecient wealth to establish a political and scholarly class and many hours are spent in the pursuit and celebration of practical arts.

Shared customary codes and values

Electrians value logic, rationality, and contemplation. They are thought of as proud philosophers even if their focus is on practical philosophies seeking to affect the world rather than the metaphysical philosophies of Tryperia and the south.

When eating it is considered rude to pass food to the right or handle a knife with the right hand.

Common Dress code

Electrians often wear loose and open tunics and sotas. Their warm and fair climate lends itself to open sandals and minimal coverings. They wear many colors and clothing is often filigreed with gold or mock-gold and loose jewelry is also common.

Art & Architecture

Electrian architecture is noted for its open air design supported by marble pillars and towering caryatids. Painted sculptures and friezes are a common sight both incorporated into architecture and as stand alone works of art. Almost any figure of history or legend can been seen immortalized in marble or alabaster somewhere within Electrian lands.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Upon reaching adulthood an Electrian prince will be gifted a beaded gold necklace from his father or regent's neck to be worn twice about the head as a princely crown.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

A woman giving birth will attempt to do so over a used ballast stone or a fragment thereof, usually placed beneath the bed. This is thought to imbue the child with strength and good fortune.

Coming of Age Rites

At the age of fifteen an Electrian youth will be given an elixir made primarily from the Lying Flower, a toxic weed that sometimes grows among edible plants which it resembles. They will paint it upon their foreheads and ingest a portion to garner a painful and revelatory experience. Some who find the experience more tolerable may continue to use the mixture in pursuit of gaining the status of an oracle.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Among the wealthy the dead will be placed in specially built "grave houses" wherein they will sit for seven days as family members on other acquaintances whisper at the door, giving prayers and telling the dead of news and secrets left untold in life. The poorer may rent small body sized shrines at special temples for a small fee that serve the same purpose.   The body will then be taken and a cremation or burial will be observed.

Common Taboos

Women are forbidden to have their hair tied or braided during religious observances.   To tie or place a knotted robe in the house wherein a child is being born is thought to be a curse upon the mother and child.

Men conscious of their appearance. keep their hair short an tidy and their beards shaven or cleanly kempt.   Women style their hair in a variety of way but loose updos are more common than in other places. Women's hair is often curled and a paler complexion is considered desirable.

Courtship Ideals

Marriages are often arranged by seeking out the services of a profession match-maker. The hand of a particularly eligible maiden are sometimes competed for through contests and games.

Relationship Ideals

Women are usually subservient to men, but in an aristocratic household the mistress would wield power comparable to the master.
