C10-94-11-15 Magical Duel in Street

The residents of Battlehelm cavern were shocked by the sights and sounds of an unusual fight on Berrias Way on the 13th Midum. The first signs of trouble were dismissed by many as raised voices are not uncommon on that well known market street. What caught some people’s attention was that the voices seemed to be screaming in different languages. One voice was dwarven, while the other was unfamiliar to many. Those closest to the confrontation soon guessed what the language was as they saw an elf arguing with a young local apprentice.   The apprentice was dressed in the robes of a spellcaster while the elf wore the sort of travelling garb normally associated with caravan guards and other mercenaries. The arguement did not appear to be progressing as neither side seemed to understand the other. Some of those watching had begun placing bets on which of the two would give up first when a blast of energy flew from the hands of the elf and detonated several pots behind the young dwarf. A magic response came from the young apprentice and the spectators were sent diving for cover.   Order was only restored when a square was deployed to subdue to the two spellcasters. Neither spellcaster put up much resistance once they realised they were surrounded by soldiers and both were taken into custody. The apprentice wizard was released into his master's care later that, but the elf remained in custody. He was later identified as Virxalim Liadon, a member of a military exchange program with the Kingdom of the Forest.   Although the crime of assault would ordinarily have resulted in Virxalim being banished from Khezdur, with the expectation that he would be locked up by his own people, an appeal from the Kingdom of the Forest's Embassy resulted in the case undergoing an extended review. An arguement was put forward that Virxalim's inability to understand the local language had resulted in a misunderstanding and that he had felt threatened by the apprentice wizard. It was also suggested that given VIrxalim's magical power, if he had meant to harm the apprentice, he would have had ample opportunity, and that the shots fired were meant to scare not harm.   After much deliberation it was decided that there were some mitigating circumstances in Virxalim favour and that he would not be exiled. He has been sentenced to 3 months in prison, and fined all of his earnings since joining the military exchange program. The money will be used to compensate the traders and crafters whose goods were damaged during the fight. Once released Virxalim will be subject to further restrictions and any further assaults will result in immediate imprisonment for life.
