Beryl's Ring of Altered Missile

This gold ring has four gemstones set in small cluster. The gems are:

• Jasper (blue).
• Citrine (yellow).
• Sardonyx (red).
• Chrysoprase (green).

This ring allows the caster to change the energy type of Magic Missile or ray spells to Fire, Cold, Lightning, or Acid. It can only affect spells that normally use Force, Fire, Cold, Lightning, or Acid. The choice of which energy type to use must be made before the spell is cast and can only affect one spell each turn. Spells which produce multiple rays have all of the rays changed to the same energy type.

History

The ring was created for Beryl Evadne Garrick, a gnome from Nacht. The Garricks are a well known family of gnomish spellcasters, though their magic is known to be a little unpredictable at times. Beryl was no exception to this, having a great capacity for magic but relatively little control or flexibility in her spell casting.
Beryl was determined to be a successful adventurer, exploring the world and defeating monsters with her magic. However, she rarely had the spells needed to target a creature's weaknesses which frustrated both her and those she travelled with. Following the classic Garrick method for solving this sort of problem, Beryl arranged for a ring to be enchanted for her. This cost her decades of savings along with agreeing commitments that would leave her in debt for the decades to come, but she felt it was worthwhile.
Beryl never finished paying off the loans she took out to pay for the ring as she died only a few years after acquiring the ring (she was showing off her spells when she should have been watching where she put her feet). The ring was lost for almost a century before another group of explorers found it, deemed it worthless to them and sold it on.
