Monument World

A monument world is a planet (or moon, etc.) that is preserved in an untouched state as a memorial to its former inhabitants, or for other reasons.

By interstellar treaty, monument worlds are off-limits to visitors except for authorized research expeditions. This is not actively policed, for the most part, but some monument worlds are home to a small number of “Witnesses” whose presence is symbolic.
