Spell-Touched

A strange phenomenon of Detritus is that prolonged exposure across multiple generations produces a set of mutations that seem to incorporate schools of magic into the very nature of those who live there. Many citizens of Detritus may feature minor magical quirks or manifest visual tells of their origins, but the most dramatic manifestations come with the Spell-Touched. These can be people of any species (except Detritans themselves) who are so affected by wild magic that they begin to embody that magic and its effects in their very beings. Spell-Touched features usually over-ride the natural differences between the species (though physically they may still resemble their kind) and so they are more often united by their magical attunement than by their original family background.   It is theorised that the Spell-Touched are the result of the sheer amount of wild magic running around on Detritus. Due to the nature of the plane as the dumping-ground for all kinds of magical artefacts, spells and energy discharges, the air and the land are drenched in magic. This manifests more clearly in some areas than others: the Blazes or Firefields and the Wildfire Sea are places where the elements hold sway. But the sheer number of Spell-Touched animals and natural magical disasters around show that this is true of the entire plane.   The most commonly-recognised Spell-Touched are easily categorised by the commonly-recognised schools of magic, but it is rumoured that people exist who embody a specific spell rather than an entire category of magic. Unfortunately there is limited research on this point, though a number of researchers from the Universal Enclave take an intense interest in this area of study.   The recognised classifications of Spell-Touched humanoids are:
  • Banishers: People who exude null fields that channel the power of Abjuration.
  • Unbound: These people exist in multiple dimensions at once, needing to concentrate to maintain a singular presence in any one.
  • Augurs: Those to whom Divination lends an unusual amount of insight.
  • Iron-Minds: While these Spell-Touched are most feared for their ability to manipulate others with the power of Enchantment, their steely wills are their most notable feature.
  • Rampant: Powered by strong Evocation, these people often find their magical energies to be unpredictable and difficult to control.
  • Imager: Illusion lends the Imagers powers to deceive the senses, meaning that few trust them.
  • Charnels: These ill-fated people touched by Necromancy find it hard to settle anywhere, as they channel life and death through their very beings.
  • Mutables : Fickle-formed and adaptable, Mutables find themselves changed by the power of Transmutation.
