Charnels

The most hunted amongst the Spell-Touched, Charnels cannot disguise their alignment with Necromancy as the Iron-Skin can. They are marked by the signs of death, chilling the air around them with an unearthly ambience and sapping the life of those they touch. Many have a drawn or ill appearance, and some may find that superficial injuries do not heal until they come into contact with negative energy, leaving gaping wounds that do not bleed. Those most strongly affected may find that their bones show through their skin or their teeth lengthen and become sharp. They seem, to all appearances, like undead. However, despite their unnerving appearance, many Charnels are friendly and ordinary people. Some are soured by the way the world treats them but others display immense compassion for the suffering of others. They are most likely to become healers in very accepting communities as they can transfer life energy from one person to another through themselves. It is imperfect and only used when healing is not available, but they are such a strange mix of positive and negative energy types that they can, with a little effort, control both. When channelled through a Charnel, life energy is intensified and gives more than was taken from the original donor.   There is always a need for those who are willing and able to channel negative energies and the eerie settlement of Sepulchre is a hub for burial rites, resurrections and other such services. The Charnels who live there lead monastic lives, never touching anyone else out of fear of harming them. This harsh life is not for everyone: there are some Charnels who travel the plane following the whispers of ghosts to retrieve bodies long lost, and honour the memories of those who have died. A few Charnels make their living from being detectives or scouts who investigate missing persons cases, murders and bloody battles.
