Captain Hinter

Captain Malkaz "Maelstrom" Hinter is the dragonborn captain of the Silt Sea Fleet, operating out of Port Scoff. His own ship, the Thunderer, is a fast but durable silt skimmer with a highly-trained crew. Captain Hinter's closest friend is his dwarven first mate, Ortolan Riffraff. Despite the well-publicised backstabbing between the two of them over the years, they have saved one another's lives on countless occasions and seem to have settled into a reliable, if unusual, friendship.
Captain Hinter's great aim in life is to kill the legendary Trashdragon Tyrannus. The Thunderer will set out for lengthy voyages across the Silt Sea, not returning for months, as Hinter combs Detritus for the dragon. To those who seem surprised that a dragonborn would seek out perhaps the only Trashdragon in existence with murder in mind, Hinter will tell the tragic tale of his home settlement, a colony of Dragonborn who lived in the Glass Mountains, and how everyone he loved was destroyed by Tyrannus when he was only a hatchling. To those who know Hinter better or ask around, it quickly becomes clear that this tale, while perhaps true, is not the reason for his hunt for Tyrannus: whether it is a quest for glory or some deep-rooted personal vendetta, that is still a mystery to all but Ortolan, and she is not saying anything.
Hinter's manner is bold and brash, his shining gold scales glinting as he leaps onto a table in a tavern at the slightest provocation to spin a story of derring do. In private, he is more thoughtful and has a cunning strategic mind. While the Silt Sea Fleet might be a side-effect of his search for Tyrannus, he and Ortolan manage it well, bringing on trusted captains and eager young traders who could benefit from the alliance. They are the unofficial guardians of Port Scoff, escorting precious cargos, retrieving vulnerable vessels that founder in the Silt Sea and protecting the Port when it comes under attack from raiders. Hinter has a soft streak, much to Ortolan's dismay, and finds it hard to resist a call for help. Many of the sailors in his fleet and community lynchpins in Port Scoff got their start when tragedy befell them and Captain Hinter came to the rescue. Ortolan will often say, with a roll of the eyes, "An orphan only has to look sad near Malkaz and suddenly we're off on a mission of revenge with yet another mouth to feed onboard."
