War of the Eternal Night

Several thousand years ago, the continent of Ercellonia was split into individual self-governed city states. These city states would have their own specialties in trade, military or the arts, and for the most part, the heads of these cities maintained peace.

After years of this peace, however, the dark wizard Diabulus came to power in the northeastern settlement of Revantis. From Revantis, Diabulus began to influence the neighboring city-states and led them to believe that the rest of Ercellonia was plotting against them - that under his protection, he could maintain their freedom.

With several city-states under Diabulus control, he manufactured a raid against a small village on the outskirts of his influence to further the idea that he was the only one within Ercellonia that could be trusted. As part of this take over, Diabulus convinced the nearby city-states that an army would be necessary to defend their homes, and proceeded to summon an undead army claiming it would just be for protection.

The independent city-states, relying on each other for trade and vital supplies, were easily taken over, and Diabulus reigned as the ruler of Ercellonia. Thousands were slaughtered in combat, trying to protect their homes, but the undead army was too powerful to take on alone. Diabulus cast the entire continent of Ercellonia into an endless night, draping the continent in darkness.

Hope was not lost, however, for a small band of rebels in Portsford. Through patience and determination, a rebellion banded together and activated the ancient leviathans located around Ercellonia. Diabulus was then banished to a Demiplane of Dread. Revantis was destroyed, and Diabulus' keep, Dominion's Crest, was demolished.
