Pride of Six Silver

The story of Six Silver is a myth about a family of 3 devout followers of Mammaroth hiding from persecution in Brelk by staying in the home of a neighbor at the cost of 6 silver. The story has several different renditions with the most notable distinctions usually being what aspect of the original story that is down played as opposed to what details are added. The most famous version is the classic stage play "Six Silver" which tells the story without any exclusions, though it does add some specifics and introduce a level of inter character drama not present in most telling's. The story as told by the church of Brelk omits the context of the purge and has the family hiding from a powerful and evil witch. The family's steadfast denial of charity is downplayed and they accept the room and food freely but are paying the six silver for a religious symbol to use in prayer. Other variations of the story downplay the neighbor and focus mainly on the hardships the family endures in order to survive off of six silver pieces.      The story: During the Purge of Brelk a family of devout followers of Mammaroth decided that they would flee the country rather than face the wrath of the new order despite how difficult it would be for them to make it to the borders. A neighbor of theirs stopped them before they could leave and asked them to hide in the attic above his shop as it would be safer there. The family refused on the grounds that accepting the charity of the kind neighbor would be against the tenants of their beliefs. The neighbor considered this and said that he would charge them rent at 1 silver a person for the whole year. Family agree and hid themselves away in the attic as the city was being searched. Over the course of their hiding they grew hungry as their rations dwindled. The neighbor offered to give them some of his food, but the family rejected again on the grounds of charity. The neighbor told them that he would sell them the food. They need only pay a silver each and he would bring them food for the whole year. The family agreed giving him 3 more silver which was the last of their meager savings. They stayed hidden for weeks, then for months, but still they never found a way they could escape the land safely. Finally after many months the year came to an end. The father came to the neighbor and admitted they had no more money to pay the rent or buy the food as cheap as it was. The man did not wish to see his family captured or starved to death but saw few other options available. The family was adamant that they would not abandon their faith and accept charity from the neighbor. The neighbor thought long and hard about the situation before speaking. He said that he would not force them to abandon their faith by giving them charity. The price of the room and food would remain the same, however he was willing to buy something from the man. The father freely admitted they had nothing in the way of possessions and he had nothing to offer. But the neighbor insisted by saying he would pay 6 silver for the father's pride. The father asked how he could sell such a thing as pride. The neighbor explained that if the father admitted that the family needed help, then he would give them the six silver. The father agreed and the family was secure for another year. In that time they managed to figure out a way to escape the country and flee to a safer place where they could rebuild.
