Llolth, the Spider Queen (Low-l-th)
A people scarred by the sun, the Drow were originally servants of Veo Kres, the Goddess of Night. The greatest among them, their first champion and Matriarch, named Llolth, was raised by the Night Mother to a place of deification for her early service, taking on a horrifying-yet-emblematic form among the Drow pantheon as the Spider Queen.
However, legends among the Drow say that Veo Kres abandoned them, and when they were pushed back beneath the ground in the first Dominion of the Sun, it was Acanthus, the God of Twilight, who came to Llolth and formed a pact for the good of their people, giving them power to summon fiends and draw on magic outside the bounds of Veo Kres' teachings.
Under Llolth's eternal guidance, the Drow do not treasure surface virtues like honesty, loyalty, truth, or justice - these are all concepts that are weakening those above, and that their Spider Queen calls them to rise above. They will do anything to one-up each other, and know well that trusting anyone in their society can easily lead to their death, or worse, their fall from Llolth's grace.
Some members of Drow society, in their piety, can be picked and tested by Llolth, made to endure hardship, trial, deceit, and degradation, often at the hands of the church itself. If they survive, they may become especially elevated in Drow society as a Scion, but failures are condemned to the dungeons beneath the Crimson Keep, where they are warped by the power of Llolth to become Arachnomancers or, worse, Drider.
