The Solar System

When it comes to the field of astronomy, it is definitely the one science that get completely thrown around with each new discovery. In ancient times we thought everything revolved around our planet, later we thought everything revolved around our sun, and now not even that may be true.

The Sun

The sun, with its lifegiving powers, is important in almost every culture in and outside of Tosormi. There is no doubt that the big burning ball in the sky is crucial for the survival of almost every living thing.   A long time ago people used to think that the sun wandered across the sky and went away during the night. There was no way of knowing what went on outside of the planet itself. As astronomers slowly but surely discovered more, both about the planet and the things outside it, the idea that maybe the planet revolved around the sun instead. With more discoveries this idea was more and more widely accepted and astronomers started to regard the sun as the center of the universe.   Lately, however, scientists has started developing better and better telescopes to look out into space and some astronomers have started thinking that maybe our sun is just one of many that revolves around something else. This idea is still fairly new however and have not gotten a hold of the astronomers as a group.

The planets

There is, as for as we know, seven planets revolving around the sun, including our own. Out of these other planets, five can be seen with the naked eye if you know what to look for, and have a little luck. The latest discovered planet, and the one furthest away from the sun, can only be seen with a telescope.

Our planet, Tigsald

Our planet is the fourth from the sun and is, as far as we know, the only planet with life. The planet revolves around the sun, completing one orbit in just over 337.33 days. The scientific name for our planet is Tigsald according to lomian astronomers.   Surrounding the planet is the two moons, called after the twin Gods in almost every culture. The legends say that one of the twins were ugly and misshaped, while the other was the most beautiful being in the lands (although it varies a bit how they came to be this way). Thus, the smaller, unsymmetric moon got named after the ugly twin and the round, shining moon got named after the beautiful god. The lomian names for the two moons are Xarszens for the greater moon and Xavzet for the minor moon.

The inner planets

Between ourselves and the sun lies three planets, commonly known as 'the inner planets'.   Closest to our sun is the red planet Deslov. It was first discovered in the year 142 and got named after the emperor at the time in Lomia. The planet can be seen with the naked eye. No moons have been observed around this planet.   Second to the sun is the planet Hond. It was only discovered in the year 366 with the invention of better telescopes as it is very dark. Astronomers have not yet figured out what makes it so dark even though it supposedly is not very far away. Two moons have been observed around it.   Ruz is the third planet, and the planet closest to us. It was officially discovered in the year 48, but it very likely was already known before that. The planet has one moon.

The outer planets

Outside our own planet lies, as far as we know today, three more planets.   The fifth planet in our system is Dullamox. This planet shines very brightly and no specific person or date is attributed to its discovery as its existence has been known for centuries.   After that comes Tenonsta. The discovery of this planet is also much contested, but the official year of discovery is the year 67. However, its one, huge, moon wasn't discovered until centuries later.   The planet furthest away from us is also the biggest, and the name, Srat, also comes from an ancient name for gigants. To this day 12 moons have been discovered around this planet, however, scientists speculate that many more could be present.

Other celestial bodies

All throughout time people have observed the skies and seen countless of objects that can not be classed as planets. With the rise of astronomy as a science, and the invention of modern telescopes, a lot of these objects have started to get classified and identified. It seems the space outside our planet is filled with things, although the question of whether or not there is other life out there is still unanswered.   The most famous one of these non-planetary objects is The Creator's Light, a comet visible in Tosormi every 70-ish years.
