The Lorekeepers and Storytellers of the Fey'ki

The fey'ki of Arden, across several different glades, have a tradition of gathering stories and songs. Each glade has varying numbers of Lorekeepers, who keep the memories of their glade alive, and also collect myth and lore from myriad realms far from their home. The Keepers keep caravans or towers filled with books, painstakingly transcribed from the songs brought to them by the Storytellers. The collection of oral tradition and written records are described as The Memory of each glade, the communities of fey tabaxi trusting their history (and future) to their Keepers and Tellers.   Every year, the Keepers will commune either face to face, or through dreams, at the Great Moot, with the Keepers of other tribes or glades across Arden and beyond, and share the most important tales and findings from the world with each other. They always keep some things back, and this is how each Glade's "Memory" has a different identity. All glades will collect any stories they find, but most will have a focus. Some collect dark lore, others songs of freedom, others still tales of home and hearth. All Tellers seek tales of the old fey'ki empires, and of Dieterra, and all of these are shared in the Great Moot, with the vain hope that it might remind the fey'ki of how to return to what they have lost.   Fey'ki travel in several ways, to gather stories:
  • War Caravan: When a glade (or glades) declare war, many caravans will join together, led by a Warkeeper, and a powerful set of allies drawn from the tribe but other allies made along the way. This is rare, unheard of for a thousand years, and only a unanimous decision made by all High Lorekeepers in a glade will enable war to be declared.
  • Voyaging Caravan: Often, a Keeper and a Teller will travel together as part of a larger caravan of fey'ki, gathering stories from places that a lone traveller might struggle to reach. These can be for longer journeys, or journeys between glades and tribes, or migration. Sometimes a glade will resettle part of their families to a new place, and a Keeper and a Teller are chosen to lead more people with them. If a caravan is given, always a Keeper and a Teller travel together, as traditionally (but not always), Keepers are female and Tellers male. Fey'ki pay respect to the duality of these roles, just like the moon and sun.
  • Questing Caravan: A Keeper or Teller might individually lead a questing group or mission, on request from a High Lorekeeper, to learn something critical for the survival of their glade or tribe. They are set to travel or take action, and return with a specific piece of knowledge, or the story of a victory against darkness.
  • A Lonesong: Often Keepers or Tellers are dispatched on what is called a "lonesong", a journey without a caravan, either for self-discovery, or because prophecy has decreed it, or because they need to learn something key. It is often a lonely journey, and they are required to return only when it "feels right", or when they have something sacred, or special, to share. Sometimes a Lonesong can be dispatched from a caravan already, or from the glade itself, and it varies greatly.

Structure

Despite each glade doing it slightly differently, there are commonalities in the structure. In every glade, there are the following ranks:   The Memory Keeper: Who holds this rank is kept secret within each glade, and is often not the one people think it is. Most of the time it is a person who is publicly a Lorekeeper, but other times they are utterly secret. They make the decisions (with consultation) about what stories and songs are shared at the Great Moot, and they hold as much of The Memory in their mind as they can. The Memory Keeper can also make a call for an unscheduled Moot, at short notice, if they feel the fey'ki survival is at stake.    High Lorekeeper: These are the Keepers, who work to harness and store The Memory in various formats, and work to dispatch Storytellers and Lorekeepers across the land to supplement their knowledge. They hold leadership positions, most of the time, within each glade. In some glades, these are divided by gender, in others they are free dependent on calling and choice. A High Lorekeeper will become permanently based in the glade until they decide to leave, but they cannot leave if there is no Keeper to replace their position.   Lorekeepers: These travel out with caravans and others of the people, and are often (but not always) female. They tend to outrank Storytellers. They tend to be groomed to be leaders, or prophets, and whilst they are no less skilled or brave than their male counterparts, they are often more valued for their divining, storytelling properties and their ability to commune more easily with Dieterra.   Storytellers: These also travel with caravans, and are often (but not always) male. They are mostly the lowest ranking fey'ki within this group, but some of the greatest High Lorekeepers have been drawn from these ranks. They often have the most to prove, and tend to take greatest risks with their gathering of stories.

Culture

  • The Keepers and Tellers venerate Dieterra, more than any other god.
  • They are experts at navigating by stars and moon, and prefer usually to travel at night (except on a new moon).
  • They avoid travelling at high noon.
  • Most caravans keep a Book of Ceremonies (or the Keeper holds it in their memory), to help them navigate cultures they interact with.
