Faith of Shadowent
The faith of Shadowent is small in number, because they do not proselytise or seek servants. This is because when Shadowent turned against Vaskull, she also had to purge almost all of her followers, who had worshipped her in her darkest days. This broke her heart, for she had always loved most, those who gave her unrequired affection as her followers did.
Since then, she has personally guided the growth of her church, and does so incredibly carefully, choosing – or directing her priests to choose – initiates that carry huge guilt, or who have been redeemed, or who understand suffering. Now, the church of Shadowent seeks to help others achieve their dreams, so long as they protect Torthe, and the Balance, but in doing so they agree to give up all their own personal dreams and ambitions, save those to serve their Queen of Darkness.
Her faith often chooses to protect and champion the dreams of the downtrodden, the overlooked, the middle child or hated stepsister. They do not often concern themselves with the dreams of the rich or the powerful, for they have their own ability to make that a reality. Conversely, the nightmares of the powerful are dangerous indeed, and her faith have a duty to protect against those.
There are very, very few temples to Shadowent any longer, most of the faith operating on an apprentice basis, with one priest and one apprentice at a time. As such, at different times, the faith of Shadowent could be limited to one travelling priest in a country. This is rare, thankfully, given the faith has grown, but given the palpable hatred that the followers of Vaskull bear towards Shadowent and her servants, there are times when great pogroms are announced and her followers diminish greatly.
Tenets of Faith
- Hold your guilt close, it is the only true recollection of our misdeeds;
- All can be redeemed, but not all can be redeemed in life;
- Dreams, and nightmares, are sacred, for each holds a truth;
- Guard your apprentice with your life, that is your highest duty;
- The dreams of a spinning wife, are more glorious than a high priestess;
- The nightmares of a spinning wife are nothing compared to a queen’s;
- Children are sacred, and their dreams pure, their nightmares rich;
- Seek out outworld others from the void, and purge and cleanse;
- Watch the skeins of fate that are dropped by Hevren or Dieterra, because in their insignificant leavings, other truths are held;
- Watch Vaskull and his servants, and strike only when sure of victory – but then strike hard and ensure none remain alive.
Priesthood
Ranks within the faith:
- The faith has only two ranks: master and apprentice.
- The faith never meets physically, except as masters and apprentices, they can and do meet via dreams.
- Clerics of Shadowent never reveal themselves, and she has granted them permission to masquerade as clerics of Dieterra in her darker forms.
- For this reason, they are known as the Lonely Faith.
- There are no symbols to Shadowent in the mortal world, but in their dreams they all appear in full black niquab, bearing gems that give them their secret names. In only the rarest of times will anyone know of another cleric of Shadowent in the physical realm. It is said that only in the End Times will the Lonely Faith be unmasked, and they will sing as a united church again, facing down the great invaders from the void.
