Vardena colony

Vardena is the main colony established by the Vard people on the mainlands. Partially due to the young nature of the colony and due to the nature of the Vard people, it is much more decentralised than its neighbours.

Structure

There is no real leader of the Vardena Colony, though in times of crisis they may band together to elect someone to unite and lead them that is appropriate for that particular crisis. For the most part, though, each settlement handles things on an individual level. Larger settlements may have chiefs and councils that aid them and deal with some of the overarching bureaucracy, but every individual is still involved in the goings-on. Every full moon, the entirety of the settlement's will meet up to listen to and vote on proposals, which is colloquially referred to as a 'moon meet'. Rejected proposals can be revised and voted on again essentially til people get tired of dealing with it. Thus far, despite their continuing consolidation of ownership, this has shown no signs of changing to a more centralised system.

Culture

Like all Vard the citizens of the colony are practical but not abjectly cruel, unwilling to fight amongst themselves for resources. Most fighting is due to provocation but tends to be on an individual level; it is considered foolish to engage in warfare against other settlements. This is because they could at another time offer aid if you do not have the right amount of a certain resource, and the long-term circle of warfare is not worth the short-term boost of resources. However, there is also a general sense that people of other countries who do not know how to defend themselves or pray to gods who do not intervene on their behalves are somewhat pitiful and silly, another attitude common to the Vard people. On the other hand, they don't care much about outsiders unless they cause trouble, though they are generally somewhat wary of them and especially so for those from the core countries of the Curadas Empire. People's appearances and personalities are considered unimportant in comparison to their ability to contribute in some way and their willingness to work together and do so.   Most settlements are friendly with each other to a degree, or at the very least neutral towards each other. Generally speaking, there is not much point in infighting when you come from a hostile land that fights you at every corner and are currently trying to tame a land rather different from those you are used to.

Public Agenda

The life of the Vard often involves, at least at one point or another, seafaring, moving or starving. For those that wanted to leave those aspects of their lives behind and build a more permanent, stationary life, the Vardena colony was established. They only laid claim to land that no other nation had claimed and have no wish to take more.

History

The Vardena colony was only settled in 882 PS and wasn't considered it's own country by the Empire, the last to consider it such, until 904. Nonetheless, between the first settlers arriving and the present day much of the ragged wilderness has started to be tamed. Livestock have been slowly introduced to no obvious adverse affect so far and some settlements, especially those first built on the coast, have started to become very permanent and solid looking.

Demography and Population

The majority of the population still lives on or near the coast, where they landed, with the remaining 30-ish percent further inland. Their species demographics is similar to that of Vard in the Isles, with Humans being the majority by a small margin and the rest split between Goblins, Orcs, and mixed-species individuals, with a true minority of other species including Selkies, Merrow and a variety of plane-touched.

Territories

Despite Vardena technically being considered to border onto Galiya, they have actually only colonised approximately halfway to Galiya so far, with the rest being considered something of a wildland by Galiyans. The Vard are careful about resources, a holdover from the Isles, so they leave as much of the wilderness undisturbed as they can. Some of the species amongst the Vard also prefer untampered caves and forests as places to live so they are left for them.

Military

As with the Vard on the Isles there is no military as such, though there are usually identifiable leaders and roles. Many Vard, including those on Vardena, are trained at least somewhat in some form of warfare, with more amounts of those choosing skills that are applicable to other situations such as archery and axe-work. Either way no scouting party, hunting party or settlement is ever undefended from either wildlife or raids.

Foreign Relations

The Kingdom of Galiya is more than happy to leave Vardena to it since it was land they didn't dare to tread on due to the proximity to the Polar Coast. In fact, there is a certain feeling of bemused goodwill towards the Vard for even attempting such a thing. Of course, the closest permanent settlement in Vardena is still very far away from the borders of Galiya, which may explain this somewhat lax attitude.   The main body of the Empire is less enthused about the foreign nation suddenly next to a border country but, since they made no move to claim that land, are unable to do much about it.   Many of the inhabitants of the Scattered Isles find it a curious and worthy endeavour, and a few even make the journey just to visit and see how it is going as well as bring back items to the Isles that cannot be found there. Trade between Vardena and the Isles is picking up as they establish a firmer grip over the land and begin cultivating more unique items to trade and the overall relationship is quite friendly.
