Red Dragons in Toril | World Anvil

Red Dragons

Red dragons are vain, reflected in their proud, upright bearing and disdainful expression. Their pupils fade as they age, until the oldest have eyes with the appearance of molten orbs. An angry
red may have flames licking up from eyes and nostrils—and an envelope of heat-shimmer around them. Their frill and wings are an ashy blue or purple grey toward the edges, becoming darker with ages—nearly black on older specimens. Reds smell like smoke and sulphur.
Red dragons are covetous, mostly interested only in their own well-being, vanity and the extension of their treasure hoards. They are supremely confident of their own abilities and were prone to making snap decisions without any forethought.
The largest and most powerful of the chromatic dragons, red dragons are also the most common. These dragons breathe a cone of fire.

Description

Red dragons are physically distinguished by their enormous size and wingspan. They have two large horns upon their heads, which pointed backwards toward their wings. Red dragons usually seal themselves within their lairs where they have access to everything they need.

Personality

Red dragons believe that every creature in the world is one of impurity. They value a certain specific obsession over everything else, one could consider them extreme collectors.
Their relatively smug personality seems to out-smug the other dragons. They're hard-working dragons that are willing to ensure that they are superior in their field of collection. Some of these rivalries last longer than civilizations.
Even though they consider every creature as impure, they are firm believers that everyone should always give their most and the opposite of this is considered as a weakness. Red dragons are also quite territorial, you would never want to diminish a red's valuable collection. Thankfully, most people are smart enough to flee or fix their mistake if they realize what they did.
Reds are stubborn dragons, a dragon seeking help from any form of authority is a rare one.

Combat

Red dragons can expel an extremely devastating cone of fire and this fire is in no way a match for anything else than another dragon.
Red dragons prefer to fight with their physical bite and claws, but they might barbecue obviously powerful or numerous foes before bloodletting with glee. The dragons would also prefer not to use their breath on particularly weak enemies so as to not destroy the valuable treasure they carry.

Society

Lair

As mentioned before, red dragons are experts when it comes to various types of collections. Reds outside of civilization might seek a collection purely excising of treasure and gold, whereas the
opposite will usually run large museums or libraries.

Habitat

Red dragons love to make their lairs around mountainous regions, preferably volcanoes, which don't just fit their natural need for warmth, but also keep pesky thieves away. Younger red dragons and wyrmlings mostly stay inside until they learn to fend for themselves.

Reproduction

It is considered an honor for a male red dragon to receive a visitation from a female red. The female takes care of the hatched eggs alone, sometimes with assistance of an infertile female red. An average red dragon lays four eggs per century with an incubation time of 270 days.

Relationships

Red dragons are mostly focused on their collections and therefore rarely leave their lair, unless for the purpose of mating or if someone or something has something which would fit their collection.
They usually aren't a big fan of other dragons unless they know for certain they have no ill intent.

Notable Red Dragons

Ashardalon

Ashardalon was a powerful red dragon who was mentioned in songs throughout the multiverse. He was known for his depredations and unorthodox methods to extend his own life.
An extremely old red dragon, Ashardalon had an appearance that diverged somewhat from usual ancient dragons of his kind. He possessed unusual demonic features and a scar on his chest in the shape of an enormous winged humanoid.
Ashardalon was regarded as a self-important dragon with an almost desperate attachment to his own life. He was willing to go through whatever means necessary to prevent his own death.
After suffering a mortal wound, Ashardalon attempted to extend his life by binding a balor called Ammet to his chest in order to function as a second heart. However, his injuries were too extensive for the balor's power to keep Ashardalon alive. Whatever happened after that is a mystery.

Balagos

Balagos, known as the Flying Flame, is one of the most famous red dragons. He truly believes that his destiny is to rule over all dragonkind. However, this pursued him to destroy many dragons who opposed him; he killed so many dragons that elves eventually named him ''Dragonsbane''.
Despite his ego, Balagos is not stupid in the least. Whenever he notices that a battle is lost, he retreats to win another day. He is a good judge of character, not limited to just dragons; and he always calculates the consequences and outcomes of his acts carefully.
He has no hatred for anyone in particular, he considers everyone his rightful subjects and only those who directly oppose him deserve death.
Balagos bore children only once, but after they killed their mother he slaughtered all of them.

Firkraag

Also known as Lord Jierdan Firkraag, was one of the world's most civilized red dragons. He took over an area after their lord, Garrend Windspear, had abandoned them. He from there on out took care of the orcs, hobgoblins, lycanthropes and golems that were living there.
As the first official dragon lord that ruled over a society he made many enemies. He was eventually disgracefully murdered by an unknown killer in his sleep. His example was one many other dragons took as a way of life. From the moment he received his official title, more and more dragons started lurking around in civilizations and cities. When he was murdered, many dragons and supporters of the draconic-humanoid society were outraged.

The Firkraag Agreement

This agreement was signed by many lords and ladies in the Sword Coast in 1369 DR, on the 1-year remembrance of Lord Jierdan Firkraag's death.
The Firkraag Agreement act ensured safety for all draconic creatures in the cities and towns that signed the agreement. All laws that would count for humanoids, now also included creatures of draconic nature.

Klauth

Klauth, also known as Old Snarl, is supposedly one of the oldest dragons alive who has not been turned into a dracolich. He is often considered thoroughly evil towards his own kind, claiming no dragon could possible live in a harmonized humanoid-draconic society.
He rules The Spine of the World with an iron, yet just fist as he keeps the inhabitants safe from intrusion and other dangers. Any dragon knows travelling too far north will inevitably result into a deadly first meeting with Old Snarl.
In 1339 DR, Klauth was heavily wounded as several ancient white and blue dragons wanted to knock him off his throne, even with those wounds he reigned superior.

Mistinarperadnacles Hai Draco

Also known as Mist, is the ancient red dragon famous for killing the Abomination of Moander and barely coming out alive.
She is an ancient red dragon of about 91 meters (300ft) from head to tail's end. Even though her age would suggest otherwise, her scales are a bright red with the occasional purple scale mixed through it.
Her personality is far from that of a typical red dragon. Though she occasionally lavished in the taste of living creatures, she didn't enjoy killin gjust for the sake of killing or the joy of inspiring terror. She has always considered those ideals dull and unappealing. She instead values entertainment, music, and most of all stories.
After The Firkraag Agreement she moved to Waterdeep and started the Font of Knowledge
