H. Henry Harrag

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Nowaydays, Harrag is a sallow fat man, who had lost one of his legs in a fight against sahuagin in his years as a pirate.

Identifying Characteristics

During his younger years, Harrag was described as unscrupulous.

In his older years, and despite his gruff appearance, Harrag is described as a cutthroat while doing business.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

In his younger years, Harrag was an infamous pirate feared along the Sword Coast. For him, no ship was too formidable a target and no treasure was too small.

His days as a pirate came to an end when, at some point before 1479 DR, the Leviathan ran aground during a storm before the Docks of Neverwinter had been rebuilt. Unable to use his ship to sail ever again, Harrag refurbished the Leviathan, transforming it into a tavern that soon became popular because of its shape, the Beached Leviathan. Harrag was able to open his establishment thanks to the patronage of Neverwinter's Lord Protector, Dagult Neverember.

Neverember also cleared his pasts records in exchange for his support to the New Neverwinter movement, and so Harrag became one of his supporters in the city out of gratitude.

Failures & Embarrassments

Although Harrag was unaware of this, Neverember used the old innkeeper as a pawn to advance his own agenda. At some point after the opening of the Beached Leviathan, Neverember tasked one of his agents to turn Harrag's shadow into a self-aware creature loyal to Neverember, to keep an eye on the old pirate and to watch over him.

Morality & Philosophy

Naturally, due to his popular position in Neverwinter's society, Harrag has grown quite the following throughout the city. He is genuinely convinced that this ''news'' he's been spreading is correct, but if it's proven that one of his articles is wrong he will own up to it.

He considers himself an equaliser of news in a city thrown off its rhythm by The Dissipation.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Harrag has always been a loyalist of Dagult Neverember. He despises Lyra Alagondar and her family and has always blames them for Neverwinter's past unfortune.

Ever since Lyra Alagondar has taken back Neverwinter's throne, he's been spending his free time talking trash about her and spreading rumours about her reign.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Sometime after opening the Beached Leviathan, Harrag met Andrella, a destitute widow whose husband had been killed recently. Out of compassion, he hired her as one of the maids of the tavern. Over time, Harrag came to deeply respect her, unaware of the feelings Andrella had for him.

Family Ties

The first H in his full name is unknown to the rest of the world. Anyone dumb enough to dig around will see their reputation left in ruin.

In reality, both his parents were so sure of the baby's gender that they both adamantly decided on a name. When his father was wrong, they decided to stick to Henry instead of Henrietta.

Religious Views

Harrag doesn't consider himself a cultiest - he just wants to protect Neverwinter. The Oracles of the Unseeing Eye feed him information, whispering half-truths and doomsday predictions into his ear. They tell him:

  • "The Keepers don’t know what they’re meddling with."
  • "There are things mortals were never meant to see."
  • "Already, arcane magic is failing—if we let them continue, it’ll bring ruin to us all."

Harrag, convinced that he’s acting in Neverwinter’s best interest, spreads these rumors further. He sees himself as a whistleblower, warning common folk about the dangers of planar research. But in reality, he’s doing exactly what the Oracles want—sowing doubt, weakening public support for arcane magic, and making the Keepers look like reckless fools.

How the Players Discover This:

  • A cloaked figure (a member of the Oracles) is seen meeting with Harrag late at night, slipping him documents or gold.
  • Harrag’s rumors match almost exactly with Oracle propaganda—word for word. Too much to be a coincidence.
  • Harrag gains information discovered within the walls of The House of Knowledge.

Social Aptitude

Harrag is a smart guy and spreads most of his rumours indirectly, ensuring they sound like gossip, not an agenda.

  • The Drunk at the Bar: “You didn’t hear this from me, but…”
  • The Concerned Citizen: “I just think we should be careful who we trust.”
  • The Anonymous Letter: A parchment left on a tavern table, filled with vague accusations.
  • The Hired Gossip: Paying a few dock workers or street performers to whisper things into the right ears.
  • "Accidental" Eavesdropping: Sitting just close enough to the right people to let them overhear a "private" conversation.

Consequences of the Rumours

Throughout the campaign, rumours spread and cause possibly detrimental consequences.

Act 1: The "Traitor in the Keepers" Accusation (Social / Investigation Encounter)

Location: The House of Knowledge
Themes: Paranoia, Mistrust, Betrayal

  • The rumor that one of the Keepers is a spy has reached the inner circle. Now, some Keepers don’t trust each other—or the players.
  • A respected researcher is accused of being an Oracle informant. The Keepers demand that the players interrogate them to find the truth.

How It Could Play Out:

  • Insight vs. Deception: The players must question the accused, determining if they really are an informant or just a victim of rumors.
  • Trapping the Real Spy: Maybe the accusation was a diversion—and the real traitor is someone else entirely.
  • Finding the Leak: Perhaps someone has been feeding Harrag information unknowingly, meaning he has a secret informant in the Keepers.

Possible Consequences:

  • If they fail, the Keepers might wrongfully punish an innocent member, weakening morale.
  • If they succeed, they find the real leak—or prove that Harrag is manipulating them internally.

Act 2: The "Corrupt Leader" Trial (Social / Political Encounter)

Location: A Neverwinter Council Hall
Themes: Political Pressure, Public Opinion, Manipulation

  • The rumor that Maurice Lewis takes bribes from powerful benefactors has grown out of control.
  • A faction within Neverwinter’s government calls for a formal inquiry, publicly challenging Maurice’s leadership.
  • The players are invited to speak in his defense—but any misstep could damage the Keepers’ legitimacy.

How It Could Play Out:

  • Public Debate: The players argue in front of Neverwinter’s leaders, trying to prove Maurice’s innocence.
  • Calling Out Harrag: The players might trace the rumor back to its source and use that to expose Harrag’s manipulation.
  • Revealing an Actual Conspiracy: What if someone is funding the Keepers—but for unknown reasons? What if Maurice himself has doubts?

Possible Consequences:

  • If they fail, Maurice could lose credibility, leading to internal fractures within the Keepers.
  • If they succeed, the Keepers gain more political backing—but Harrag will retaliate with even worse rumors.

Act 3: The Rumors Spiral Into Chaos (Social + Magical Sabotage)

Location: The Moonstone Mask, a Public Debate Hall, or the Keepers’ Headquarters
Themes: Panic, Misdirection, Turning a Crisis to Your Advantage

  • Everything starts the same way: a public forum, a debate, or a council hearing.
  • However, Harrag has planned one final move—a magical disturbance designed to confirm his lies.
  • Right as the debate reaches its peak, a planar rift opens nearby—seemingly caused by the Keepers’ research. Suddenly, the rumors feel real.

How It Could Play Out:

  • Quick Investigation (Arcana / Perception) – The players realize that the planar rift is artificially created, possibly by an Oracle agent or a sabotaged magical device.
  • Fighting the Rumor in Real-Time (Persuasion / Deception) – The players must calm the crowd, proving that this is a setup, not an actual Keeper failure.
  • Tracking the Real Culprit (Stealth / Insight) – If they act fast, the players might catch the saboteur before they escape.
  • Stopping the Rift from Growing (Arcana / Spellcasting) – If the players fail to contain the rift, it could unleash planar horrors into Neverwinter.

Possible Outcomes:

  • Victory: The players prove the sabotage, expose Harrag’s involvement, and turn the city against him.
  • Partial Success: The city is still shaken, and while the Keepers survive politically, they may be under strict new regulations.
  • Failure: The players can’t prove their innocence, and the Keepers are blamed for the disaster. They might be forced into exile or extreme secrecy.
