Session 89: On the way to the Mind Flayer lair Report

General Summary

Session 89 – Wednesday December 1, 2021 – On the way to the Mind Flayer lair.

4.5 Hour Role Play/ battle session. 5:30 PM to 10:30PM

It is the 20th day of the month of Uktar (The Rotting) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis

Goals:

• Find the Mind Flayer lair and raise an army to take out the Elder Brain
• Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer (Blade, Hilt and guard)
• Locate the Amber Sarcophagi and destroy them with the god Destroyer
• Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.
• White Dragon at Purple Rocks

Investigating the Roaringhorn Estate

Rolen and Tyrena broke open the coffin and found bones with no direct evidence of how the person was killed. Jaquette found the body had been there for over 50 years. Rolen collected the bones. The party went on examining the rest of the basement. They found come children’s clothing. Rolen tasted the various buckets and vats of liquid but didn’t recognize what it was. Searching the rest of the house they found 500 platinum, Roaringhorn’s spellbook and enough materials to create a set of brewer’s supplies. Rolen also took a couple vials for fluid from vats.

Tyrena and Jaquette found the unconscious 80-year-old man strapped to a table. They woke him up and he told them his name is Seth. They asked him how old he was and the told them 8. They released his bindings and called in Lucky to talk to him. Lucky sat him up and felt his emaciated body. They found out he’s from Everlund. Lucy gave him some food and Seth had a hard time keeping it down. Lucky touched Seth and left a mark of the clover on him.

Leaving Waterdeep

The constables came down the stairs and found Tyrena in the basement. Tyrena began ordering the dwarf Dref to take Seth and care for him for a few days and then take him to his mother in Everlund. Rolen had the City Guards seize all the property and store it in a safe place as the Order of Heroes may have need of it in the future. The party left the City watch to clean up the mess and then went to the Harpers teleportation circle to go to Neverwinter.

The Harpers at the teleportation circles in Waterdeep and Neverwinter greeted the OoH and expressed their concern for the party’s tardiness. In Neverwinter the were greeted by Cornelius (sent ahead by Roaringhorn.) Cornelius asked about Dickon as Dickon was going to be the most Sr. Harper who was going to lead the Harper forces.

Mustering the forces

The OoH and Cornelius made their way to the cemetery outside of Neverwinter where they saw the large gathering of Hapers and Paladins from the Order of the Gauntlet. A tall Paladin approached and introduced himself as Faramond, a Vindicator with the Order of the Gauntlet. Rolen gave him a signed sketch of the OoH and Faramond informed him that his troops are ready to go. Rolen and Anna realized there were not enough supplies to feed and house everyone for the 4-day journey. Lucky took ½ of the 500 platinum they just received and went to buy food. Jaquette took the other 250 platinum and was told to go get “supplies.” Meanwhile Tyrena inspected the troops and Anna and Rolen talked with the Harper leaders.

Cornelius joined Anna and Rolen and they found Valar and Dabella, two Bright Candles of the Harpers. Rolen relayed the story of Roaringhorn and Dickon very unemotionally. Cornelius was very distraught at the news. Rolen explained that the OoH will take on the leadership of all the forces. Rolen and Anna told the leaders to “Be sure your forces stay on the path and don’t eat the Berries.”

Shopping

Jaquette cast windwalk on herself and Lucky and they went to get supplies. Landing in Neverwinter Lucky ran off to local pubs to get Ale, Ale, Ale, food, and Ale. Being late in the evening, Jaquette wandered the streets looking for someone to point her in the direction of “Camping supplies.” She found an old man who told her to go to “Ted’s Tack and Tackle, but It’s closed for the night.” She asked, “Where does Ted live?”

Arriving at Ted’s home Jaquette found Ted and told him she needed stuff and said, “I can make it worth your while.” She then showed him handfuls of platinum. Ted quickly led her to the shop. Ted asked what she needs, and she asked for his help. Ted sold her tents, bedrolls, bedrolls, and backpacks for 200 people. He sold her a case of caltrops, Salt, Rope, torches, some oil, shovels, picks, grappling hooks, and a spyglass. He then offered his horse and cart to carry the stuff wherever she needed all for 100pp.

Lucky cleaned out several pubs of all their spare barrels of ale. Lucky also obtained a horse and cart to carry everything. He wound up with about 20 barrels of ale and lots of bread, meat, chicken wings and cheese platters. He and Jaquette rode with the carts back to the Cemetery. Arriving at the camp they saw Tyrena telling tales of the OoH to a large group of enamored men who were listening to her every word and staring at her in the fire light. As soon as Tyrena saw Lucky and Jaquette she asked the men for help and all quickly ran to help. Rolen paid 10pp for each of the Horse and Carts and the Merchants walked back to Neverwinter, very happy.

The Calm of the night before

Cornelius spent some time with Rolen and explained his life history and his dream to rescue a light-haired elven maiden and marry her. He explained that he’s a cleric in training and has come with about 20 potions of healing. Lucky spent most of the night drinking with many and entertaining the troops. A few of the Harpers did not imbibe in the alcohol and told the OoH that they will stay on guard for Mind Flayers with wings. The night was peaceful, no Mind Flayers arrived, and the party finally had a long rest. In the morning Lucky hastily made the Banners to grant them safe passage through the forest. Anna and Rolen briefed the army on the nature of Mind Flayers and possible ways to kill them.

The army goes into the Shadowfell

Tyrena formed a plan for travel and the party all helped organize the troops and she agreed to lead the troops. Lucky was a bit behind Tyrena looking for a large rock. Rolen was towards the middle. The other party members were mostly in the back with Anna and Jaquette on horses. The troops lined up 3 or 4 men abreast. Tyrena led them into the crypt and through the portal into the Shadowfell. As the Party emerged Rollen called out the name of Alaric Saltzman thee times. The Vampire Tiefling met with Rolen and offered fifteen zombies to accompany Rolen. Rolen kept them at the rear of the column.

Lucky asked Tyrena to help locate a large rock. Tyrena pointed out a large rock and Lucky polymorphed it into a Young Silver Dragon. Lucky cast Geas on the Dragon to Kill all Illithid and Protect the Campaign. The Dragon flew over the troops providing comfort to some. Anna saw that the dragon could be seen from great distances. Lucky brought the dragon low to the ground so it wouldn’t be a beacon. Anna noticed that something else flying may have seen the dragon and it flew away. Cornelius hung out with Jaquette for a bit and Jaquette destroyed his dreams by saying “Perhaps a woman may not want to be ‘saved’.” She did give him some advice regarding women, but Cornelius still left her feeling a bit distraught.

The forest

Tyrena saw the trail got a little narrower as it led into the forest. Tyrena had the troops reposition to only 3 abreast. Lucky messaged the dragon “Scaly Boy” and asked him to come down and walk with the party. The dragon flew down to Lucky and he turned out to be a close talker. Lucky persuaded the dragon to allow him to ride on the dragon’s back as they walked through the forest trail. About ½ way through the wood, the Drow, Din’hrae, stepped out to greet the party. He told them to beware that there are Mind Flayers in the woods and telling them, “Please stay on the path and we will protect you.” Din’hrae asked Tyrena that if the Drow need help from the Mind Flayers would the OoH forces aid? Tyrena said they would. Din’hrae told Tyrena that if they need to leave the path to aid simply say “For House Xorlarrin, we shall aid you.”

Lucky asked if there was some place they could stop and eat? Din’hrae pointed to a clearing about ¼ mile down the path. Din’hrae told the OoH that they will have some Drow flank the column through this part of the forest and protect them from Mind Flayers. Tyrena told the Paladins up front: “We will continue for about 15 minutes and then take a break and eat with the Drow, pass it along.” The troops at the back of the column eventually received the message “In 30 minutes we’ll eat some Drow.”

A Picnic Lunch

About a ¼ mile later they found a small clearing in the trail and stopped. Tyrena had the Paladins setup a defensive perimeter and told Lucky, “No fire. We don’t want to draw attention.” They heard a loud screeching sound. Moments later the leg of a large elk like creature was thrown from the forest into the path, and then some more. A Drow appeared in the shrubs and said “Enjoy.” Everyone took a short rest. Cornelius went to Lucky and got some more advice on how to obtain an Elf maiden as a wife. Lucky gave Cornelius some very good life lessons. Lucky then gave Cornelius a Lucky coin so that if he should meet an Elf Lucky would let Cornelius know. The Paladins started to let the guard down. Tyrena noticed and started running drills with them to keep them on their toes.

Ambush

With the guard back on their toes, everyone finished lunch and continued on the journey. After about 2 hours they could just perceive the end of the forest in the distance. They heard a noise from above and saw the wings of an ancient dragon spread wide and was fast descending upon them. As it came in closer, they could see the hood of an Elder Brain atop the dragon with its long tentacles plunging into the back of the dragon’s head. Tyrena yelled to the troops, “Scatter!” The dragon swooped low and spewed a salty liquid from its mouth dousing most of the army in addition to Jaquette, Anna, Rolen and the Silver dragon. 60% of the Army simply fell over unconscious from the brine of the Dragon’s breath. Rolen and Jaquette were hit head on by the liquid and Anna and the Dragon evaded some if the spray. The spray from the dragon was filled with little mind flayer tadpoles. Everyone who was hit with the spray had tadpoles crawl into their ears!

Anna felt a sharp pain and then began concentrating on protection from evil and good on herself and began blade singing. Lucky cast blink and disappeared. Al turned into a T-Rex. The sliver dragon felt a sharp pain from the tadpole and then took off after the Elder Brain Dragon breathing its ice breath on it. Jaquette too felt the headache from the tadpoles and then cast 9th level Mass Cure wounds and healed all the infected people 40 hp and that was just enough to kill the tadpoles in their heads! The Elder Brain dragon enslaved the Silver dragon and the two headed over the forest towards the mountain. Rolen screamed back to the army “Deal with the bodies” and then dimension doored himself onto of the back of the dragon and started stabbing into it with the Black Razor. The Shadow Dragon grappled Rolen with one of its tentacles and beat him with a tentacle every chance it had.

Cornelius grabbed a healing potion and poured it into the mouth of one of the Harpers who laid on the ground unconscious. The potion had no effect on the unconscious person. Tyrena cast plant grown and had the plants encompass all the bodies that lay unconscious. Tyrena had the Paladins fire their crossbows at the dragon but only a couple bolts hit.

Round 2

With the dragon flying away Anna cast magic missiles at the Elder Brain Dragon and then she ran into the thick forest making her way past cobwebs and thorns. Lucky cast fly and moved within 10 feet of the Dragon and gave Rolen and inspiration. Jaquette cast conjure animals and brough 6 giant vultures into existence and they all attacked the Elder Brain Dragon. Hurt, the Elder brain dragon let out a loud Roar frightening the vultures, Tyrena, Lucky and (Jaquette?) The Elder Brain killed one vulture with his claw and then missed Rolen. Rolen Marked the Elder Brain Dragon and critically smited the creature, hurting it badly…
