Secret Door to a Fire Cell

Jaquette and Luigi walked back to the main stairwell with the Horse Willow and the lizard Tim. Anna found a secret door on the north wall of the eastern hall and opened the door. Waves of heat blasted out of the cramped cell behind the door. The walls were scribed with relief carvings showing volcanoes setting cities ablaze. Rows of tiny holes were bored into the floor and the ten-foot-high ceiling. A human skeleton embedded in the opposite wall held an iron sconce with a burning red candle in it. Anna, Tyrena and Jeter walked in and Rolen waited outside. The Door closed and those inside saw molten lave flowing toward the grate in the ceiling. Tyrena cast “water Walk” but then realized they were in an anti-magic field. Anna Slammed her adamantine hammer on the door but quickly realized the door was impervious to damage. Jeter snuffed out the candle and they were immediately teleported to another room.

The Air Cell

The three immediately began to choke as there were teleported to a room with no light, no sound and no air. In the dark they instinctively knew they were still in the anti-magic field. They all felt the walls and found the walls had carvings and the skeleton of an Aarakocra on the wall holding a candle. In the dark Tyrena and Jeter tried to light the candle but quickly realized there is no air and no magic and no way for them to light the candle. Anna, finding that her bag of holding was no longer functioning and realized she was suffocating, tried to jump to the ceiling but to no avail. Anna collapsed with 0 hit points and began dying. The other two felt her fall to the floor and began panicking as they too began to suffocate.

Good guy Rolen

Rolen, still in the hall, saw the secret door re-open and was hit a wave of heat as before. This time he saw the other three were gone and the candle was lit. He stepped into the room and the door again shut. He heard the gurgling sounds above and saw bright lava heading towards the holes in the ceiling. Instinctively he reached for the candle and snuffed it out. He too was immediately transported to the dark room with no air.

Once in the room he too began to suffocate. Having darksight, he saw Anna unconscious on the floor and opened his bag of holding where he saw that it was empty. Realizing he was in an anti-magic field and would be dead in about 10 seconds, he quickly looked at the walls. He saw the Aarakocra skeleton on the wall and pulled off one of the bones. He saw wax seals on both ends of the bone, put it up to his mouth, removed the wax seal and breathed in some air. Three things simultaneously happened next. One, the anti-magic field disappeared. Two, Jeter’s light spell on the end of his staff was no longer suppressed and light filled the room. Three, Rolen was teleported away to another room.

Saving Anna

When the light came on, Jeter had caught just a brief glimpse of Rolen with a Bone up to his mouth before he disappeared. Jeter saw the sculptural reliefs on the walls of the cell showing tornadoes uprooting trees and tearing cities apart. He clearly saw the Arakocra skeleton (missing one large bone) embedded in a wall. Jeter Grabbed two bones. He put one up to Anna’s mouth, but she did not inhale. Jeter put the other up to his mouth and held on tightly to Anna. He broke the seal and breathed in the air and disappeared. About to pass out, Tyrena grabbed a bone from the Arakocra skeleton and with her final action before passing out, she was able to put the end of the bone next to her mouth and break the seal. Breathing in the stale air, she too teleported to another room.

They arrived in a tomb filled with terracotta warriors, kneeling in neat ranks around a polished wooden coffin. Between the warriors, four aisles scattered with broken pottery led up to a coffin, whose painted lid showed a leopard with serpents sprouting from its shoulders. Jeter and Tyrena appeared on a rune at the eastern edge of this “plus sign” shaped room. Jeter and Anna appeared at the southern edge on a different rune. Jeter reached into his backpack and pulled out a healer’s kit, read the instruction manual and was able to stabilize Anna. Whispering into Anna’s ear, he said, “Remember, I saved your life.”

Shagambi’s Tomb

Rolen asked Tyrena what happened, and Tyrena began to answer. All the Terracotta Warriors simultaneously turned to face them and reach for their swords. Rolen and Tyrena stopped talking and the Warriors all went back to looking at the coffin. Communicating with minor illusion, Rolen told Jeter to not say anything, Jeter responded likewise with the image of “don’t make any noise.” Tyrena used “Druid Craft” to create the sound of a mouse at the far corner of the room. The Terracotta Warriors turned in the direction of the noise and 8 of them stomped and stabbed at the floor where the mouse noise was coming from. The noise stopped and the warriors returned to their positions.

Rolen examined the Rune and perceived that it is some sort of teleportation Rune although he wasn’t familiar with that spell. Rolen then examined the shards of clay filing the pathway and surmised that it may be risky to walk along the path. Jeter found a potion of healing on Anna and fed it to her brining her back to consciousness. Tyrena quietly poured a little water on one of the Terracotta Warriors and nothing happened. Rolen had a twinkle in his eye as he formed a cool plan. He raised his arms looking at all the clay pieces in the pathway. He walked toward them ready to cast a spell but stepped on the rune and Rolen disappeared from the room.

Anna gasped for breath and Jeter motioned for her to stay quiet. She noticed the rune and recognized it as a teleportation rune. Tyrena pulled out his flash bang grenades and motioned that she was going to throw them on the far side of the room. Anna motioned for her to wait as she had another idea. Anna put the immoveable rod in the air and Jeter gave her a boost to get up on it. Anna then hopped from head-to-head towards the Coffin, but her feet squeaked loudly on one of them and all the Terracotta warriors unsheathed the swords.

Terracotta Warriors

Tyrena saw the Warriors move and threw the flashbang grenades towards the north. She then cast Spike growth on the same group. Anna started attacking as she made her way to the coffin. Jeter cast an illusion to attract the Warriors in the other direction to give Anna time to get to the Sarcophagus. Some warriors began attacking Anna. Tyrena took out her bow and cast “Volley” on the Warriors attacking Anna. The distractions were just enough to allow Anna to get to the coffin. She opened it and saw several valuables including a music box that began to play loudly. Anna grabbed the music box. Jeter grabbed the moon stones, 200gp and the Mandolin. The Spirt of Sagambi tried to inhabit Jeter but Nangnang prevented it.

The Terracotta Warriors had a difficult time attacking the party with Tyrena continuing the volley of arrows falling upon them. The Stunned warriors picked up their swords. Anna smashed the music box hoping to stop the warriors, but it didn’t work. Anna again hopped onto the heads of the warriors and ran to the northern teleportation rune and disappeared. Jeter disengaged from the battle and ran to the Eastern rune where Rolen disappeared, and he too disappeared. Tyrena followed Jeter.

The Mirror of Life trapping

While Jeter, Tyrena and Anna were battling the Terracotta Warriors, Rolen was teleported to a small room at the end of a hall that held a large mirror. Facing the mirror when he appeared, he felt a magical pull but was able to resist. Knowing his friends may be coming by, he felt the least risky thing to do would be to remove the mirror. Unable to remove the mirror from the wall, even with his crowbar, he decided to destroy the mirror. Firing his crossbow, he destroyed the mirror. Immediately nine creatures popped out of the broken glass including a Chultan Male, an Invisible Stalker, a Minotaur named Zaal, a Troll, a Drow mage (Tlad Xolbrys) a human adventurer named Biff Longsteel of the Yellow banner (whom Rolen saw as a doppelganger), a giant four-armed gargoyle, a Female Chultan warrior named Lukanu and a Stirge. They headed towards the exit. Rolen stepped back and cast Force cage blocking the exit. Anna, Tyrena and Jeter then all appeared in the room with the 9 creatures.

The troll and the Invisible Stalker attacked. Biff Longsteel aided the three members of the Order of Heroes trapped in the room. Jeter got hit by the invisible Stalker. Anna grabbed her mace of terror and frightened the Troll. Tyrena tried to escape and Rolen pointed towards the corner where the Invisible Stalker was. Tyrena swung her Tomahawk in the direction Rolen was pointing and contacted the Invisible Stalker. Jeter grabbled the Amulet of the Black Skull and teleported to the hall. Rolen pointed at the Invisible Stalker who hit Tyrena, and he also told Jeter that the human is a doppelganger. Jeter told Rolen that Anna is very hurt and needs to get out.

Anna tried to dispel the wall of force but failed. She then cried and banged on the force cage. Rolen said “It’s too risky!” The Doppelganger continued to attack the Troll. Anna cast green flame blade and attacked the Troll. Tyrena took some chalk dust and threw it on the Invisible Stalker revealing it. The Troll ended its frightened condition and turned back toward the others. Seeing the Troll, Jeter sighed and used the Amulet to transport back into the room. The transport resulted in a symbol of Acererak seared into the back of his neck and a curse placed on Jeter. Anna Focused on the Troll. Biff began focusing on the Invisible Stalker helping Tyrena. The Troll started attacking Tyrena. Rolen saw the Trolls claws ripping into Tyrena’s flesh.

Jeter twinned his firebolt and hit the Troll and destroyed the Invisible Stalker. Biff turned towards the Troll and began slashing it. Anna attacked the Troll, dislocated it’s shoulders and then legs, and it fell to the ground dead. Seeing the 2 most hostile creatures fall, Rolen dropped the force cage, fired 3 bolts into Biff’s head, literally blowing his brains out all over the Gargoyle. Rolen spoke firmly “Nobody else move!”

The prisoners of the Mirror

Rolen told the remaining creatures “We are prisoners here too; we have no ill intent.” The Chultan male, A’tan, was let go as he seemed to pose no threat. The Chultan female warrior named Lukanu called the Minotaur Zaal who stood by her side. She told the party that they had her respect. She was the bodyguard to Queen Napaka of Omu and had been trapped her during Acererak’s assault on Omu. Rolen explained that the queen is long dead and handed her the skull of the granddaughter of Napaka, Nepartak. Lukanu accepted it and went off with Zaal to find out what happened to her queen.

The four-armed Gargoyle seemed to be protecting the shards of the mirror and didn’t move. The party saw the Stirge and Rolen shot it dead. The Drow was looking through his spell book as the Chultan’s left. Anna asked in Elvish if he was a wizard and in Elvish, he responded that he was a mage. Anna offered a trade of spells and the Drow said his name is “Tlad Xolbrys.” The Drow said he would share a spell in exchange for food and a place to rest. Anna retrieved her immovable rod and asked for a rest. Rolen suggested they keep with their routine and take a rest in an hour. They ran into Jaquette in the hallway with the horse and lizard. Jaquette provide quite a bit of healing to both Tyrena and Anna. The Drow went with Jaquette to the safe room. Anna used her spell scroll of remove curse on Jeter and said, “We’re now even.” Jaquette cast cure wounds on Jeter also.

Stone slabs

The party walked east down the hall as Jaquette, Tlad, Tim and Willow went north towards the grand staircase. At the end of the eastern hall, Anna, Jeter, Rolen and Tyrena found a stone slab blocking the end of the corridor. Painted on the slab was the image of a gaunt male humanoid wearing a hooded cloak, its face a mask of stars. The figure’s withered left hand was raised with palm extended. Jeter imitated the pose, and the slab sank into the floor, revealing a dusty passageway beyond. Relief carvings on the walls depicted crowds of humanoids fleeing a black star in the sky, with rays of light extending from it turning those it struck to dust.

Tyrena, Anna, Jeter and Rolen went in. The passageway inside went north/south and they went south. At the southern end the path, they continued East and found a wider path leading north. Anna spotted something shiny on a pedestal to the north. They went north and saw, a gold crown topped with a glittering black opal resting on a marble pedestal. Not seeing any traps, Anna carefully put the crown into the portable hole. As she did this, they saw a stone slab in the north rise. Tyrena looked at the block passage and saw painted on the inside of the slab, a male humanoid wearing a hooded cloak, once again with stars where his face should be. The figure held up his right arm, which was severed neatly at the elbow. They heard two thumps in the distance to the east and then they saw a creepy undead creature turning the corner in the NW passage.

Bodak’s, a new form of undead.

Anna walked up to the creature and smashed it in the face with a Warhammer. Just being within the creature’s presence Anna felt her life slowly get sucked out a little. Rolen used one of his stars from his robe and badly wounded one of the Bodaks. Tyrena took aim at one of the Bodaks, looked it square in the eyes and was met with the Bodak’s death gaze. Tyrena passed out unconscious with 0 hit points. Jeter twinspelled polymorph and then twisted fate and turned both Bodaks into rats. Anna tossed a healing potion to Rolen who gave it to Jeter who fed it to Tyrena bringing her back to consciousness.

Rolen wandered down the eastern passageway and came to a green stone face with a devilish countenance protruding from the wall. The devil’s mouth was agape and filled with darkness. Figuring that the darkness must be a sphere of annihilation, Rolen formed a clever plan. He went back and captured both rats and threw them into the sphere of annihilation. They disappeared without any sounds and moments later, the 2 Bodaks came crawling out of the Sphere. Jeter saw this and said, “All of my sorcery points wasted!”

Tyrena, no wanting to look directly at the creatures, turned her head and was able to fire several shots at the creatures badly wounding him. Jeter grabbed the amulet and teleported outside the door where he saw a blank stone slab. Anna tried to break through the door with her Adamantine Warhammer, but it had no effect. Anna Blindly swung at the Bodak and hit it with her fist. Rolen cast a Wall of Light and killed one of the Bodaks. Tyrena trying to not look at the Eyes of the Bodak, again fired without looking at the creature and struck the creature, killing it.

Leaving the trapped room.

Jeter attempted to disintegrate a part of the wall to get back into the room, but the spell failed. Tyrena and Rolen cut off the arm of one of the Bodak’s and held up the armless body towards the door, but the door did not open. Anna said she had a spell that could work but they’d have to wait until morning since she had no more spell slots and wasn’t totally sure it would work. Rolen cast an illusion of a human with a severed arm in front of the door and it didn’t work. Jeter used the Amulet one more time to teleport back into the room.

Jeter offered to put people in the Portable hole and then use the Amulet to leave. Anna didn’t like the plan and Tyrena wasn’t too excited. Rolen was concerned if they stayed all night of what may come by. Anna said she would stay and wait. Anna explained how her spell would work and said, “if it fails, I’ll remove my own arm.” That seemed to persuade the others, but they were concerned with leaving Jaquette with the Drow. Frustrated with the situation, Anna stuck her arm into the spere of annihilation and pulled back a cauterized stump. She raised her stump next to the door and it opened. They made their way to the safe room where they found Jaquette, Luigi and the Drow and they all took a long rest.
