Dowell Harpell Character in Toril in the Age of Enialis | World Anvil

Dowell Harpell

Human Male, Neutral Late 50's   Longsaddle: It has become a stopover point for adventurers, almost equidistant between Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Mirabar, Silverymoon and The High Forest. The Harpells are known as a wizard family eager to educate and support adventurers. This has made Longsaddle more important than it's location or natural resources would deserve. It   The Harpell Family is one of only a few true wizard families on the Sword coast. They have alwayas been at Longsaddle and the town has never had (or needed) a standing army as the Harpells have always been able to protect. The town has always been moderately prosperous.   Dowell Harpell joined the Harpell family by marrying Penelope Harpell. He became their spokesman and also servs as Longsaddle's representative on the council of the Lords' Alliance. Dowell was an adept enchanter, but was a notably unskilled evoker.   Dowell met and fell in love with Penelope during a battle with a hill giant king in which Dowell was nearly eaten alive. Dowell and Penelope love eachother deeply but have an open relationship. They enjoy teaching magic to others.

Secrets:

  • It was Penelope who saved Dowell from the Hill Giant and Penelope is the vastly superior Mage. She allows Dowell to tell others he's superior and will deny this secret to anyone who asks. Penelope loaths politics and prefers that Dowell take center stage for Longsaddle.
  • Neither Dowell and Penelope have any real expertiese with politics or governance. Their natural intelligence allows them to muddle through although some in their home of Longsaddle recognize this and belive Longsaddle is being held back from it's true prosperity because of them.

Motivations:

  1. Learning New magic
  2. Teaching Magic to others and being looked at as a wise mentor
  3. Protecting Penelope
  4. Pride in Family name (not self glory, but family glory)

Pitfals

  1. Any implication that Penelope is the better wizard (or that she save him.)
  2. Any implication that the Harpells are not the most superior wizards in all of the sword coast.
  3. Any implications that he doesn't love Penelope with all his heart (even though he fools around with other women)
  4. Any implications that he can't single handedly protect longsaddle from any threat.

Human Wizard married to Penelope Harpell and took her last name.
