The Battle of Blingdenstone

Background   After the flight of the deep gnomes from Blingdenstone in 1371, it became occupied by two factions in their absence; drow scavengers intent on plundering the abandoned treasures of the deep gnomes, and a clan of deep gnomes wererats. These two factions held the city for a time, until the late 1470's, when the deep gnomes returned in force to resettle their former home. The drow, having picked most of the original loot clean, left without incident, but the wererats remained in their warrens, having come to see the city as their own home.   During the resettlement and rebuilding process, the deep gnomes worked hard to solidify their location. One of the gnomes of the Miner's Guild, directly disobeying his bosses and showing an unhealthy fixation with oozes, began to make a nuisance of himself. Before any punishment could be enacted, however, he fled without a word. With few resources available, the deep gnomes chose not to pursue, instead focusing on rebuilding efforts. And with a medusa and a magical presence that corrupted earth elementals to worry about, they certainly had enough to focus on.   Nearly ten years went by, and the Blingdenstone occupants, having been busy with their pursuits, forgot all about the unusual gnome, the few who remembered him assuming he had died somewhere else in the Underdark. However, in mid-1491 the northwestern section of the city came under sudden attack by an invading force of oozes. Unlike regular oozes, these showed a degree of cunning and malevolence not normally present in their kind, proving to be so dangerous that the gnomes fled the section of the city entirely, sealing it behind them and stationing guards at the one remaining entrance.   Unbeknownst to them, the deep gnome that they had forgotten was responsible for this army of oozes. Having made contact with Juiblex, who was roaming in the Underdark at that time, the gnome was given a portion of the demon lord's power. Styling himself the "Pudding King", he set himself up in the former ruling quarters, turning it into his own fetid palace of slime and rot.   Prelude   Upon the arrival of a group of adventurers on 27 Uktar, and returning the Diggermattocks' children safely to their parents, the adventurers began working hard to help make the city safer for the deep gnomes, receiving room, board, and payment for their efforts. Seeing a potential danger to his power, the "Pudding King" decided to prepare his forces in an effort to force past the barricades. The ghosts of the city, seeing the mustering of these oozes, warned the acting leadership of the deep gnomes, who prepared their forces in response. Having been informed of the leader of the oozes by the leader of the wererats, Chipgrin Goldwhisker, the deep gnomes asked the visiting adventurers to assist them in conducting a coordinated attack on the oozes. The adventurers accepted, and prepared for battle.   Battle   The Blingdenstone forces prepared for a three-pronged attack. The bulk of the forces would stage an attack against the "Pudding King's" forces to keep their focus, with a smaller attack force clearing a side tunnel and attacking from the flank to better convince the ooze forces that the visible forces were all that needed to be focused on. The adventurers would take a small strike force into a tunnel that crossed from wererat territory deep into the ooze-held section of the city, bypassing the majority of their forces in an attempt to slay the leader.   The battle was joined at the tolling of the eighth hour of 30 Uktar, with the deep gnomes unsealing the entrance to ooze-held territory. Their secondary force used a special alchemical compound to dissolve rubble blocking one of the tunnels to the south, engaging the oozes from a second front. The adventurers (dubbed "Wolf Patrol") slipped into the tunnel, encountering light resistance during their incursion. Emerging from the tunnel, they were set upon by two special oozes directed by the "Pudding King" himself, who used the distraction to flee into his throne room. The party overcame the oozes, though several of their weapons were damaged, and one was destroyed, in the process. Collecting the varnished spellbooks that had been hidden within the oozes, the party hurried past to end the threat of their master.   Upon encountering the maddened deep gnome, he attacked, promising to show the power of the "Faceless Lord". Despite his spellcasting ability, as well as a horrific transformation into a large ooze pulsing with blood and offal, the small task force was able to slay him, breaking the cohesion and cunning of the ooze forces.   Despite their success, the gnome forces sounded a retreat, having taken numerous injuries, used most of their anti-ooze resources, and being vastly outnumbered by the remaining ooze horde. They pulled back to the area under their control, re-sealing the barricades behind them.   Aftermath   With their forces regrouped, the deep gnomes and their allies took some time to recuperate. The next day, the Feast of the Moon, they celebrated those who fought in the battle, living and dead, and presented the adventurers gifts. The adventurers departed the following day, working towards a quest of their own. The deep gnomes then continued their rebuilding efforts, dealing with isolated oozes when necessary.   Four months later, during mid-morning of 15 Ches 1492, all remaining oozes rapidly vacated the city not long after the return of the adventurers, who were leading an expeditionary force and had returned to the city to check in on the inhabitants. The cause for this mass ooze exodus remains unknown, but scouts reported the oozes avoiding all other creatures and traveling in a southeastern direction after fleeing the city, traveling almost as if a single goal were leading all of them.
