The Civil War of The Sea (Conflict)
The Merpeople and the Sirens have co-existed in peace for centuries. Now, however, they are at war. The people of the land know not what they fight over, but the civil war is affecting them greatly. Ships rarely cross the Atlantic now, for fear of being caught in the raging battle.
The Conflict
Prelude
When Poseidon's Trident unexpectedly disappeared from its millennia-long resting place within the neutral zone between the Merpeople's territory and the Siren's territory, it sparked an unprecedented war between the two Merfolk species. The Merpeople blamed the Sirens, accusing them of stealing the artefact, while the Sirens accused the Merpeople of the same crime.
Deployment
When the Trident was found to be missing and searches failed to provide a culprit, the leader of the Atlantic Sirens sent out an army to attack the Atlantic Mer's capital city, Atlantis. The first battle waged for several weeks, steadily causing more and more chaos to the ecosystem surrounding the oceanic city.
Atlantis' governement called for reinforcements from the Warrior Witches of the Northern Atlantic territory and the Merpeople drove the Sirens from their city.
After the Merpeople retaliated by attacking the Siren city of Sh.'akah Kah, the Sirens declared war. Now each side fights the other whenever they come into contact, either through planned military strikes or when they simply spot each other in previously neutral locations.
Outcome
The war is causing great storms all across the oceans, affecting the ecosystems greatly. Huge Sea Beasts, those controlled by the Merfolk as well as those driven mad by the magic involved in the Civil War, fight throughout the seven seas with no regard for who or what might get caught between them.
Fish are fleeing active battle locations and migrating elsewhere, many species perishing in the new environments which are too harsh for them to survive in. In some places, fisherman can no longer catch edible seafood, while in others, fish and sealife flee the ocean itself in fear and beach themselves in their haste to escape.
Coastal towns and settlements are affected the most for those on the land. Tsunamis of all sizes wipe out whole towns, violent waves cause floods and eat away at beaches and settlements, whilst retreating water dries out the land in other places. Many of those living near the sea are now displaced from their homes, living in crowded shelters hastily put together by the governments of the world. Those living on islands such as Hawai'i are the most affected and are often displaced to different countries for protection if they are willing to leave.

Strength
Sirens are typically the more vicious of the two sides. They are willing to play dirty and do anything to achieve their goals.
Merpeople are normally the calmer of the Merfolk species. They also have greater numbers.
Casualties
Not all of their subspecies are filling to fight in the war.
Objectives
To retrieve Poseidon’s Trident and secure it somewhere the Merpeople will never find it. They also wish to defeat the Merpeople and reclaim the territories that the Sirens forfeited in the Merfolk treaty.
Like the Sirens, the Merpeople want to steal the Trident and place it within their own territory. Many of the Merpeople want to force the Sirens into the Deep, so the Mers can keep the rest of the oceans to themselves.
