Jascaran Opaltooth Dragon (Jas-car-an)

Official Beast of Jascara

"Sid looked up as the waiter approached with their desert. He couldn't help but grin, watching the small blue dragon perched on the waiter's forearm. The large creme brulee was placed between Sid and Peter, a pot of clotted cream set beside the plate. The waiter lent forward, bringing the dragon closer to the creme brulee. The four, clawed feet of the Jascaran opaltooth tightened their grip on the waiter's arm, wings flaring out slight as the dragon stretched its neck toward the desert.   Sid's tail waved in excitement as he watched the dragon's short muzzle drop open, revealing white teeth shining like a row of tiny galaxies, the dazzling colours matching perfectly to its four curved horns and dozen back spines.   Sid grinned up at Peter, whose face was aglow in blue as the dragon breathed fire across the sugary top of their desert."

Domestication History

When breeding Mexican opalfang dragons with Caribbean ridgetooth dragons, brothers Javyn and Rashan were trying to breed working dragons that could assist them around the house and with their cooking business. These dragons were selectively bred to be no bigger than an average house cat, with the work ethic of a transport dragon but the more social nature of a messenger dragon.    Their first attempts resulted in the azurópélom. Whilst the dragon was more sociable than the Mexican opalfang, and had an admirable willingness to work, its size and energy level were deemed to be too large to be conductive in an indoor business. In order to combat these issues, Rashan acquired a group of kamindrack from Europe and used the smaller, more sedate companion dragons to create a more even tempered and less energetic dragon. It is the results from this final crossbreeding which we can see in the modern Jascaran opaltooth.

Current & historical uses

Jascaran opaltooths are most often found in more upscale restaurants and pubs, carrying items and ingredients around crowded kitchens and delivering them to workers and customers alike. However, they are capable of performing many tasks for all kinds of businesses, and are even used in a few homes. With some time, Jascaran opaltooths can also be trained to help cook meals in place of a sapient assisted by learning the recipes, anticipating which ingredient will be called for next. Due to their highly portable size, some restaurants enjoy using these dragons to light candles and creme brulee right at the customers' tables.

Caring for your Jascaran opaltooth

Keep them indoors!

While they have retained a moderate prey drive, Jascaran opaltooth dragons have mostly lost the skills and temperament needed to fend for themselves in the wild. These dragons are indoor pets, but please keep in mind, they should not be kept in small apartments, nor should they be kept inside all the time. Having said that, please do not give them free access to a petflap if they don't have a tracker; these little rascals are fast and highly manoeuvrable - you'll never find them again!

If you are going to give your Jascaran opaltooth access to a petflap, or even an open window, pay close attention to the weather! Like many lesser dragons, Jascaran opaltooths can be extremely weather sensitive. Keep them inside during Winter! These dragons were bred to live in the heat of Jascara, so while their scorching fire breath and high body temperature can starve off the cold for some time, extended exposure to

Feeding your Jascaran opaltooth

Jascaran opaltooths are omnivorous, but be aware they require at least 80% of their diet to be made of meat. Much like cats, some Jascaran opaltooths will hunt on their own, bringing back small rodents and birds, but remain reliant on their owners to feed them the majority of their food. If you're looking for healthy treats, mangos and pomegranates are a favourite food of these small dragons.

subzero temperatures can quickly turn deadly for these loyal companions. We recommend using a magical monitoring collar, which will allow you to constantly monitor the biosigns of your beloved pet. If you're not a magic user yourself, worry not! Monitoring collars can transmit their data to an artefact of your choice in place of a person - one of our editors uses a watch to keep track of their pets, while another uses an A5 notebook.
